Punk on TRL

You’ll have to register (its free) but this piece on punk bands playing TRL is quite amusing. Says Kelefa Sanneh, “Some of the bands on ‘TRL’ this week play punk rock at its blandest.” Ouch. I wonder who they’re are talking about? The Donnas? The Used? Simple Plan? New Found Glory? Good Charlotte?

Zao cover redone

So the big “todo” about nothing is finally over. The cover for the new zao disc that has inspired controversy in small hillbilly towns nationwide has been changed. View the new and old covers here if you really care and think that the first cover was a problem to begin with. I am going to start citing my resources as I have been seeing the majority of online zine’s doing. It is a journalistic thing.

Plain White T’s - Stop

Enclosed in ĎStopÓ is a story from one boysĚ point of view that the Plain White TĚs cares to share with the world. HeĚs in a relationship with a girl who carelessly flirtĚs and makes the boy feel less than adequate in the song “DonĚt Do This to Me”, abuses the boy in “Leavin”, and forces him to question his life and what he considers his reality in “What If”. He struggles through these questions but comes to a realization of what he has to do, so he picks up, leaves the girl, and figures life out on his own. He moves to other problems in his life in the melodic masterpiece “Shine” that I can only assume he wrote to himself, “You say youĚre looking for happiness but when it comes, you run away from it!” We all need that extra push to get our foot in the door, to shape up and make purpose out of this world, and this lyrical work of a genius was written as the motivation to get us to stand up to ourselves.

The boy realizes the monotony of his life in “Happy Someday” where he complains about how his friends drink away the weekend and how he has nothing to do but work off his credit card debt. By the end of the tune, he makes plans to live happily, get paid to sing, marry his girlfriend and “fall in love all over again.” This boy has dreams and he will not let anyone think differently. He will be improved and happy with everything before he dies. Life sinks back in, with the acoustic ballad “A Lonely September,” where he remembers the days of the abusive girlfriend. He misses her terribly and he calls out to her, “I didnĚt mean for this to go as far as this did, I didnĚt mean to get so close and share what we did, and I didnĚt mean to fall in love, but I did.” He begs her to come back and admit that she loves him too, pleading his case, he brings old memories of Christmas time to mind, to give them a second chance to work things out “this time”. He leaves her to make her choice, to give it all another try and moves his story to the next chapter. “Just leave it up to destiny now. I donĚt know how much more of this I can handle, but I know that good things come to those who wait,” he cries out in “CanĚt Turn Away,” forcing him to buck up and take everything just one day at a time. He slips back to past accusations towards the girl. She still hasnĚt made his decision but obviously itĚs toward the negative. “WhatĚs your car doing outside his house, its 3 oĚclock in the morning?!” he calls out in the angry song “Penny (Perfect For You).” He puts everything on the line and gives her a piece of his mind, “If you tell him that you love him make sure he knows that you told me that too!” In the end, everything works out for the boy. He learned that the greatest lesson in life is that itĚs better to love and lost than to have never loved at all. “But you canĚt hold on to regrets and you canĚt look back, so IĚll just be thankful for the times I had with you,” he sings with his heart on his sleeve in the closing ballad “Radios in Heaven.Ó Listeners will be glad everything worked out for him, Tom Higgenson has too precious of a voice to hide and the way his fingers slide around on his guitar, with his talent, itĚs sure he will find a new love very soon.

I saw Plain White TĚs a few months ago before I heard “Stop”; I had seen their name on a ton of radio charts so my interest was peaked. I stood in awe as they performed every song perfectly, but what amazed me more than that was the vocals. The lead guitar player, Steve Mast, sings like an angel and perfects the harmonies that Higgenson presented on this CD. As soon as I bought it (the very next day), I turned straight to “Shine” and “What If,” the two songs that I was humming in my sleep the night before. Obviously they have a pop intent and I have noted numerous times they have been compared to Jimmy Eat World. After you walk away from listening to this CD the first time, I promise you will fall in love with at least one track–with one of those being the afore mentioned songs. They will force you to question yourself and look in the mirror more closely to see if you recognize the person that is staring back at you.

Punk Unplugged

Haven’t we been here before? Home run slugger, The PRP is reporting:

From Autumn To Ashes is recording an acoustic version of their song “Chloroform Perfume” with Gilby Clark of Guns n’ Roses fame at the helm. The song is being tracked for the upcoming “Punk Goes Acoustic” compilation from Fearless Records. The aforementioned outing will also feature acoustic material from the likes of Thursday, Thrice, Finch, Open Hand, Piebald, Planes Mistaken For Stars and more when it lands in stores on March 13th.

That’s a pretty solid line up of bands. Hopefully we’ll get our hands on it for review.

Iraq Coup

Saudi Arabia has suggested and supports the idea of a coup in Iraq instead of a U.S. led war.

“Saudi Arabia is reported to be behind the plot which proposes encouraging Iraqi generals to overthrow Saddam and his inner circle.”

Awesome. Just awesome. I pray that this works. (Source: BBC)

Photoshop Jordan

I haven’t seen the new Jordan commerical but from this article, on how they created a clone of the great one, I can’t wait to watch it. While most of you aren’t sports fans I hope you can appreciate the work (and the marketing) behind such a spot.

Few Left Imitating?

From my man Adam, “Few Left Standing recently played a show in West Memphis, AR under the name SCREWKNUCKLE and here are the pictures from it, it was freakin hilarious not to mention one of the best shows i’ve ever experienced. They will be doing a full scale reunion show inviting all of their old friends to play an all day festival on march 8th at the skatepark of memphis in memphis, tn.”

If you have fun stories, real news, or pictures from shows posted on your website get in touch and maybe we’ll link to it.

Bush vs. Affirmative Action

Bush’s administration is against the affirmative action policy of the University of Michigan.

“(CBS) Stepping into a key affirmative action fight, President Bush said Wednesday that his administration would join a Supreme Court challenge to a University of Michigan admissions policy that gives preference to minority students.”

Of course the civil rights people are upset by this. Jesse Jackson called Bush “the most anti-civil rights president in 50 years.” When will civil rights movement start fighting for the male, middle class, and white?
