Here is the review i did of “Sex, Love and Rock n Roll” by Social Distortion. The album came out on tuesday and is the first release by the band in 8 years.
When it comes to Social Distortion there are a few things you can expect from an album. One it will sound like Social Distortion, two it will be full of rock and roll clichés and references to all things tough. The third thing that makes a record a Social D record is the patented guitar solos and Mike Ness’s raspy voice. “Sex, Love and Rock n Roll” is no exception, though you can definitely hear the age in Ness’s voice. The album is much more in the vain of 1995’s “White Light, White Heat, White Trash” as it shows a more serious and deep side to Ness’s writing. Though still chocked full of tough guy attitude and Orange County pride, he seems to embrace his own mortality “especially on tracks like “Winners and Losers” and address the pain of the loss of Dennis Danell, founding member and Ness’s best friend since high school, who died in February of 2000. Songs like “Don’t take me for granted”, which is a tribute to Danell, really shows Mike Ness’s true emotions and love for his friend. Of course there are the classic Social D love songs like “Faithless” and the bad boy anthems like “Nickels and Dimes.” The album also features almost a warning and call to the younger generation on “Live before you die” and on “I Wasn’t Born to Follow” Overall this is a Social Distortion record, nothing new, nothing really different, and honestly that is what has made the southern California legends so good at what they do. They have been the same band with pretty much the same themes and sound since 1978. If you are a Social distortion fan run out and get this record, i know how long you have waited for it. If you are a curious music fan, pick it up because the music will be pretty much what you will get on any release. I would say this record really shows how a band can last for 20+ years and never compromise their sound and how a man like Mike Ness, love him or hate him, has grown as a writer and as a man. The band is definitely in the twilight of it’s career and with Ness being the only original member left, if this is the last Social D album I would say it is a fitting end to great legacy.
