FBI and CD ArtworkThe
Go read what Francis Heaney has to say about the FBI wrecking his CD-art experiance, a practice that CNN reported on about a year ago. We got a few graphic-artists here reading Buzzgrinder – come on, how would you feel if your layout got covered with FBI logos?

while i admit the warning is ugly and screws up the art, i think this guy needs to stop whining. a week from now that CD is going to be put into a giant CD wallet that holds 127 others. he’ll rarely ever look at the case again, and the only time he will look at the CD is in the few seconds between taking it out of its sleeve and putting it into his CD player. this guy must be living a pretty good life if an ugly FBI logo is enough to cause him so much turmoil

i would be pissed off too. the artwork is the main reason i buy a cd. half the time i look over the whole thing before even getting the cd into the player.

Personally, I agree with Tim. It’s annoying, but it’s no reason to stop buying CDs altogether. Granted though, the CD artwork isn’t that important to me. I actually buy CDs, rip them to MP3s, and listen to them on big MP3 Cds anyways. The CD artwork goes on the shelf as a collector’s item/master copy.

Damn, suddenly I feel like I’m on Jerry Springer. “You need to step back and get some perspective, honey!” “Mm-hm!” I like that Tim seems to think I have been spending my every waking moment since buying this CD stewing about it. I guess he doesn’t have a blog or he would be aware that the whole point of blogs is to whine publicly about things of not necessarily massive global consequence.

i buy the cd cause i want to listen to it. not to look at it. i can only see the artists really getting upset about it. atleast on the chariot album, they had it blend in well. instead of making it bright pink with a yellow border. i truly dont even notice/care.

to an extent i agree with Francis… especially with the warning smack dab on the disc.
But this whole thing has made me wonder about the whole “Parental Advisory” labels on the front of cds… that does a lot more to ruin the artwork than a logo on the back of a cd case… yet I don’t ever seem to remember a major uproar over that… even though that is a much more aethetically unappealing thing.

actually, you are correct in guessing that i don’t have a blog. and i guess as long as you are willing to admit that the whole thing is of no massive global consequence, i don’t mind. well, i mind less

What’s the rule on parental advisories anyway? I have some albums without them that seem more offensive than others with them. Is it a government mandate or not?

Whether you’re someone who thinks I’m an idiot for liking bands that are signed to major labels (and being afraid of CDs that might not fit my consumer — oh, the truth hurts), someone who thinks that the first thing…

For parental advisories it is my understanding that it is the labels choice. some labels have signed an agreement of some sort, but obviously not all of them.

Stores like Sears and Wal-Mart require parental advisories… Best Buy too… so chances are more likely that major labels that distribute through those stores would have them… indie labels, not as much so… although increasingly lately… I don’t know who would mandate the FBI warnings. Those things really suck… I don’t know about you, but I’ve always known of the fine print typed at the bottom of the back cover that says Unauthorized Duplication is punishable by Federal Law. I don’t know what more they’re hoping to accomplish with bigger warnings… most people affected by this made their choice years ago about whether to heed or ignore the law.
