Matt Freeman Has Cancer?
It has been reported on several messageboards that Matt Freeman, bassist for Rancid, Has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is undergoing treatment. No official statement has been released.

Lung Cancer Kills more people than any other cancer. Approx. 170,000 in the US die yearly. The stigma associated with lung cancer and smoking is ridiculous and is a huge reason it is the least funded for research per cancer death. Young non-smokers and smokers are dying of this disease. What difference does it make whether he smokes/smoked or not? It sucks and that’s all there is to it!

Matt actually was a smoker for like 20 years I believe. He also quit smoking about a year ago. I’m sad to hear that he got cancer, but as for comments about how he was just being ignorant by smoking in the first place, well way back when, smoking wasn’t nearly as frowned upon and there wasn’t as much public awareness about the dangers of it. And not to mention its become just as much of a bad habbit as biting your nails (except the nicotine in cigarettes is addicitve). Regardless, I hope Matt keeps on fighting and gets better soon!

The man has an unbelieveable amount of inspiration on and an astonishing amount of bassists including myself, what the fuck does it matter if we dont know him personally? He inspires me, he holds an important point in creating what i have become as a bassist/musician, thus its tragic that he is dying. To many including myself, music is inspiration and gives hope to thousands, gives people something to believe in and lift their spirits. Matt Freeman has played a role in through bass, and had a hand in making bass something other than just background noise for people.
I really hope he pulls through, Im not sure what good the man has done other than music but i sure as hell cant think of any bad. A great bassist, hopefully he’ll live on
