Gerard Way Vs. David Bowie

Apparently, some folks are trying to compare the new album from My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade, to the David Bowie classic The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust. We here at BuzzGrinder were curious as to how the MCR frontman measures up to Bowie in light of these recent comments. Here is the tale of the tape:

I would actually give the edge to “beer bottles” over “critical praise”… simply because any jack can earn critical praise… at least Beer Bottles are rock n roll.

Yes but not many people get critical praise for an album written 35 years ago!

    Bowie=facist?

This chart is accurate, but I’ll listen to MCR over Bowie any day.

    Dude…what!?

Those first couple Bowie albums were just plain awesome. I mean, awesome.

I don’t dig the “newer” stuff, but man. Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust, they’re just cool. His songs just had a feeling back then.

i think i have posted on here maybe a total of 2 or 3 times. i usually let the news be what it is and let people’s opinions be what they are…but i really wanted to comment on this topic.

i’m sure some people on here don’t like bowie, and that’s fine, but i vehemently disagree with this current hype that surrounds this “my chemical romance” band.

the moment i hear a song from them that is as well written as ziggy stardust, life on mars, starman, suffragette city, heroes, changes, the man who sold the world, moonage daydream, young americans, fame, sound and vision…etc, etc, etc…maybe i would believe it. or maybe when that kid becomes a great singer with a beautiful voice and doesn’t have to rely on auto tune and pitch shifters to stay in key…maybe i’ll believe it then.

or maybe i’ll believe it when hahaha, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE has been a band, recording and playing music for over 30 YEARS all the while CREATING & RECREATING themselves through out countless amounts of trends.

let’s call “my chemical romance” what they are. a trend. an “emo band.” okay, okay…maybe they are even a good, or…a really good “emo band.” however, these kids are in no way even a hair’s width of talent and creativity and art that is David Bowie, and the funny thing is they know it and they allow it to continue. it’s sad…how do they sleep at night. it’s gonna be funny when that record comes out, and it’s nothing but an auto tuned, super-glossy, over-produced, over ambitious (because of lack of talent) emo record.

they are a galactic stretch from diamond dogs, and that’s for damn sure!!

rick, comparing doesn’t mean equating. People are just finding similarities between releases. It’s okay. Take a breather.

  11. On 10/13/06 11:36 AM, rick said:

my bad, you can call it it whatever you want. pop/rock is fine by me. doesn’t change a thing.

jay, i breathe all the time. this was just kind of the icing on the cake for me and the music industry, ya know? it’s not the first time that this has happened in well…a month. are the killers forgotten already? i mean you can call it comparing…equating, whatever. the fact is, is that it is still being said.

so what are the similarities between these records. now i’m really intrigued…

please kill yourself if you listen to my chemical romance or any similarly awful band. as david cross would say, “i’d rather hear the death rattle of my only child than to have to listen to that shit.”

I gave MCR credit with 3cheers ’cause it wasn’t a terrible album. But did you see the pic of that douchebag on the tale of the tape. C’mon… who the hell are you?

  16. On 10/13/06 1:10 PM, bob the builder said:

as an insider, i can confirm what rick is saying about this band being EXTREMELY autotuned and over-produced in the studio. they still record some decent songs that are great for the current generation. BUT, anybody who would seriously compare a band like this to a legend like david bowie is:
    a. too young to have an extensive knowledge of music history
    b. void of good taste

your chart was funny though, sean.
    now, i build.

  17. On 10/13/06 1:27 PM, andy said:

You can do one for the Killers saying it’s the best rock and roll album of all time.

Compare it to like, Led Zeppelin 4 or Who’s Next or St. Pepper, Blonde on Blonde, something like that.

  18. On 10/13/06 2:23 PM, Sean said:

yes, david bowie was/is a fascist. he rode around in a car dressed up like hitler once. he also told a british paper that england would be in better shape if it had a fascist ruler.

oh, and i’m only comparing the two because others were doing it. don’t forget that.

rick - you said an ever-lovin’ mouthful man. but is the blame to rest soley on the shoulders of shitty emo bands?

    i think not.

i think it’s the listeners, the buyers that really require the stiff beating. if not for them the rest of us wouldn’t have to ponder such conundrums as how close ziggy Stardust and MCR are.

The ‘emo’ name tag is the same as the glam-rock name tag. Back in the 70’s/80’s, all forms of music appeared to be ‘glam-rock’, like today all music is ‘emo’. I presume ‘Rick’ is a Daily Mail lover.

I’ve always found My Chemical Romance to be generic, not to detract others’ appreciation for their stuff. Meanwhile, Bowie is on a different plane of existence from us mere mortals. That’s a fact.

I think this is all extremely biased. you’ve all like david bowie for years already and have done no research and havent taken any interest in mcr, so obviously you’re going to stick up for your guy and put gerard down. If you really listen to lyrics and see interviews and try a little bit, maybe you’ll find that there’s more to mcr than makeup and scene. just like there’s more to david bowie than flashy suits and bad hair. And anyone who still calls them emo doesn’t know a thing about what mcr stands for

  57. On 12/9/06 1:55 PM, mhmm said:

I don’t get people. Why argue over this stuff when clearly its not going to matter anyway. Whether you like one or the other or both, the fact that both have been successful and have a way of “moving” people in some form or another is all the credit that is needed for a musical artist. When people think they have the right of standardizing music, it just makes me think how arrogant they must be. Fuck, maybe they should try writing a song, then post it and watch them get ripped apart by the same type of people. Point is music affects people differently from person to person and its all about how your interpreting that music personally.

And the reason I’m reading this shit is cause I’m bored out of my mind in class.

Gerard totally wins over bowie hands fuckin down. At least MCRs music is actually good and means something to people. The lyrics are more complex than bowie could ever come up with. Gerard is a way more interesting person who has actaully lived a little rather than bowie over there who’s like yeh he was good but he is so old now, you need to know when to stop and make room for the more popular up-coming bands such as MCR which are the best band of all fucking time. They rock u all!

MCR is … as far as i’m concerned… riding the wave.

i’m not old. not young either… just that nice.. middle of the road.

    gerard way? … pffft.
major pro-tooling of the voice… bad lyricism… (and the new album? ripping off boie/queen/pink floyd… but only for 10 to 30 seconds a song and then backing it up with power-chord power-pop-rock)
you know that guy claimed that he created “fasioncore” (a hardcore sub-genre which emphasizes fashion.. obviously)… he was never hardcore… and fashioncore existed long before he even thought of singing in that band.

for the record.. (and those young enough to be ignorant)… bowie is STILL producing albums… every two or three years… *pop*… there’s another one. so.. to claim that mcr is now and bowie is not… is just plain ignorance.

    also… i’d like to say…

bowie was not really fascist. (it was a publicity stunt… as has been much of his career)
and…. labyrinth was an awesome movie.

    *shakes head*

oh the state of popular music…
i’m so glad i stopped listening to the radio so many years ago. it’s a sad place to be. and people who will defend their “favourite” bands to the death … for a week until something new comes out.

give it another year or two and mcr will be as much history as Poison is to us now.

The Black Parade has gotten great reviews.

    AND

David Bowie has gotten shit thrown at him numerous times (including a lollipop stick in the eye)

so what was buzzgrinder thinking putting that up as a category?

oh, and please all you mcr fans protesting siting gerard’s “hotness” as a reason he is better are really doing both mcr and their fans a disservice.

I fucking love bowie. After all, their are two Saint Davids of Rock: Bowie and Byrne.

It was just something someone at Warner said, so why is this even brought up? Wait Until MCR have been around for forty years, thenwe’ll tally up, ok? It’s completely unfair to have this up now.

Yes, I understand full well how awesome David is in all his work and all his awesome music (I like him too) but I think that MCR has some seriously AMAZING talent! let me start off by saying that i use to be a huge fan of MCR. but when theirnew record came out i was greatly dissapointed. Because, what seperated that album, from their first album? take the used for example, they change it up. but all of MCR’s songs sound the same to me. which is a let down in itself. but, taking a legend like david bowie, and comparing it to just a “emo” trend, that will die out in approx. a year time, it has no justice and it simply cant be compared.

david bowie is the clear choice.
sorry gerard, i use to love you. but now i just think youre ridculous.

All of you who say they won’t last obviously don’t know what this band has been through to get where they are. Too bad, cuz it’s all wishful thinking that they’re going away anytime soon. My Chemical Romance are not Fall Out Boy, when Fall Out Boy crashes(soon I hope), MCR will be going strong. They are here to stay and they WILL be remembered and revered. But Geezus Cryst, why are we talking about this? Gerard isn’t even 30…and My Chemical Romance just(well not just) put out their 3rd album. Wait another 5 years before you start making epic comparisons. They’ll be around. Will you bitches be?

FanGirl… 5 years from now most of won’t remember this conversation (bet you will) nor will we remember My Chemical Romance as anything other than a trendy band that was around at the right time.

David Bowie was an originator. A pioneer.

As in: The only cat doing what he did was him.

My Chemical Romance has about 500 bands to thank for their so-called “style” and “vision.” Start with Queen, watch an Adam Ant video on YouTube, then buy a bootleg of a T.S.O.L. show and see how strong your convictions are. Then, there’s this little band called AFI…

I just wanted to say that all of the people saying the gerard and MCR should win because of his/their ‘hotness’, that is RIDICULOUS. i find it sad that appearance means so much that they outweigh the overall message and talent of the band. and i know, this has always been the way it is, and it will go on being this way, but it really just pisses me off. think of all the amazingly talented bands/singers out there who will never make it simply because they do not have the ‘look’.

as to what i think about the chart, i found it quite amusing. Personally, i do think Gerard Way is hot, but that has nothing to do with why i love the band. MCR IS my favortie band. however, just because i love the music and the lyrics, that doesn’t mean at all that i am not a bowie fan. he’s one of those people who have earned the immortality that the music has. BOTH ARE AMAZING. so why does there have to be such a fued over it? does it honestly matter? if you feel like listening to bowie, then pop in a cd. if you feel like listening to MCR, then listen!

on an ending note, (sadly i just HAVE to say this) i think MRC is better, simply because i am technically a ‘youngster’ and also, i am one of the many who has been saved from suicide by gerard’s lyrics. (and emo is such a fucking stupid label)

I know that this is trying to compare 2 completely different entities, but why can’t they both have their own qualities? David Bowie is a legend and paved the way for artists/bands as did many others. In my opinion, they aren’t comparable. It is true that My Chem. did pull ideas from Ziggy Stardust, but other than that, they are who they are. Each of them are equally as important to music and to the people that listen to them.

By the way, it’d be great if everyone would stop using “emo” as an adjective or noun. I’m pretty sure that got old awhile back.

OK, many things in this…poll inaccurate. FIRST OFF, GERARD HAS BEEN CLEAN AND SOBER SINCE AUGUST 11TH OF 2004. WHAT YEAR IS IT?? 2007!!!!! and August 11th is my birthday. =3

Second of all, MCR is not emo, they do not encourage their fans to cut or anything, and they discourage that type of behavior. Gerard even bashed emo shit at the concert I went to Febuary 25th. REAL emo is shit like Hawthorne Heights; which of whom TALKS about cutting. and not once have I heard their music in a public place unless I requested it.

THIRD, how do you know what his political stance is? Are you just assuming because that wouldn’t be very smart; it’s actually a very dumb thing to do. He never talks about politics, so how would you know for sure? Did you ask him?

FOURTH, TBP has songs in it that other people can relate to. You have to look deeper than “dude in a hospital bed.” The album is all a metaphor; he is getting his point across with a fictional character as of just bluntly saying what he’s trying to convey.

Please get your facts straight and actually do some research before you make ridiculous polls such as this one.

    Must appreciated,
    Mrs. Gerard Way

Oh, and by the way, Gerard happens to be a very talented comic book writer. I read some of his stuff and it’s very good with serious events and black humor. If you are going to critic his comic writing skills, please read his comics first. Who ever made this poll must be a dumbass. -.-

Ya know, when Bowie was Gerard’s age, he had already done Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust.

You know, the Black Parade is a good album for sure, for MODERN standards. However, put it into the hindsight of 50 years of rock and roll records, this record won’t EVER be part of the best of the best.

There’s nothing spectacular about this album. It’s pretty much straight forward radio rock. Lyrically and sonically it’s tied together really well. However, what Bowie did in the late 60s/early 70s was completely new. No one ever heard anything like Space Oddity or songs like “It Ain’t Easy”. It’s like when the Ramones hit. It’s been done a million times since then, but when they came and did what they did, everyone must have been like, “What is this!?”.

So over all, The Black Parade=good album. Nothing ground breaking or revolutionary, just a good solid pop album. That’s it. Not even on the same level as Bowie.

“At around this time, Bowie became embroiled in a controversy caused by his comments to Playboy magazine apparently praising Hitler, and his statement that “Britain is ready for a fascist leader.” He later pointed out that being “ready” for one and “needing” one are two different things. In a September 1976 Playboy interview, Bowie referred to Hitler as “one of the first rock stars” and expressed admiration of Hitler’s stage presence, comparing him favourably to Mick Jagger.

Bowie may have intended to refer specifically and narrowly to Hitler’s ability to mesmerize a crowd, and not to his Aryan-supremacist views or the genocidal results. However, Bowie’s statements were accompanied by some theatrics involving an open-top vintage Mercedes and what some claimed was a Nazi salute staged outside Victoria Station.

Bowie would later angrily deny being so “foolish” as to raise a Nazi salute, claiming that the photographer had caught him in mid-wave. This incident, along with similarly controversial racist remarks by Eric Clapton around the same time, were catalysts for the formation of the Rock Against Racism movement. Later, Bowie retracted his ‘fascist’ comments, excusing himself by claiming his judgement had been affected by substance abuse.”
