Apparently, some folks are trying to compare the new album from My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade, to the David Bowie classic The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust. We here at BuzzGrinder were curious as to how the MCR frontman measures up to Bowie in light of these recent comments. Here is the tale of the tape:

let’s call “my chemical romance” what they are. a trend. an “emo band.” okay, okay…maybe they are even a good, or…a really good “emo band.” however, these kids are in no way even a hair’s width of talent and creativity and art that is David Bowie, and the funny thing is they know it and they allow it to continue. it’s sad…how do they sleep at night. it’s gonna be funny when that record comes out, and it’s nothing but an auto tuned, super-glossy, over-produced, over ambitious (because of lack of talent) emo record.

they are a galactic stretch from diamond dogs, and that’s for damn sure!!

You know, the Black Parade is a good album for sure, for MODERN standards. However, put it into the hindsight of 50 years of rock and roll records, this record won’t EVER be part of the best of the best.

There’s nothing spectacular about this album. It’s pretty much straight forward radio rock. Lyrically and sonically it’s tied together really well. However, what Bowie did in the late 60s/early 70s was completely new. No one ever heard anything like Space Oddity or songs like “It Ain’t Easy”. It’s like when the Ramones hit. It’s been done a million times since then, but when they came and did what they did, everyone must have been like, “What is this!?”.

So over all, The Black Parade=good album. Nothing ground breaking or revolutionary, just a good solid pop album. That’s it. Not even on the same level as Bowie.

I’m going to have to agree with everything Rick has said, Arletta, also, you are so eloquent, I can’t top you, but here’s only a pinch of my erratic thoughts.

I personally think there is no comparison between the two if you made me choose. That’s my prefrence, and from my observation, I’m much more of a Bowie fan.

Bowie is simply astounding. I have listened to him for most of my life, and I’m only 19, I’m far from old. He is my favorite singer, and the next is Freddie Mercury. Age is nothing. Talent and heart in music is everything, and that is what those boys have.

Most people forget their roots and past, especially when it comes to music. People look at a person and simply dismiss them for their age? Or their makeup “What’s with all the clashing colors and makeup on that guy?”. Isn’t that what you all have to deal with? I hear many of you guys complain about it elsewhere. People basing everything on the way you look? Music Makeup in Rock and Roll wouldn’t even’t be the same, or have reached so many bands if it weren’t for the legends such as David. I’m only saying this for example, the fact that you said the man wearing colors was too much, as opposed to the all black just begs for a goth name calling hayday.

Don’t close your mind to history is all I’m trying to say. I’m not here to trash anyone. It just bewilders me how shut off some of you seem.

David Bowie is a living legend, so before you go off ignoantly calling him ’some fag’ or what not, and even if you don’t like him (of course you don’t have to), he still deserves respect, for him and his like have influenced countless band and people, and I don’t doubt that he has influenced many of the bands you listen to, yes, possibly Way.

You have to realize David was doing things that no one had ever done before when he started, and he changed the world of rock and roll, forever. You don’t need to be ‘old’ to like older music, or to have a love and passion for it…or even to at least appreciate it. I’m not trying to get you to do anything but realize what some of you say “we’re all people’, so even if you don’t know what David has done for music, even if you don’t know who he is or like his many movies, or his music, you should at least give him respect as a human being.

Stop acting all high and mighty about the drugs, guys, I have a magazine where Way talks openly about doing drugs, so bugger off on that one. The whole MCR saved my life thing, can work with any music. Whatever you relate to best, be it Bowie, MCR, Nirvana, Tiesto, whatever thats not the point.
Its because if you feel something really strong, like sadness, anger, whatever it is and alot of the time you feel very alone in this feeling and it makes it a whole lot worse.
But if you’re feeling like this and you can get the emotion in the music (and dont start the emo bullshit, all good music has emotion in it) and the lyrics seem to hold a good messge to you then you feel less alone because its like “well someone had to feel what I’m feeling now to write that song and so many other people relate to it too so maybe this isn’t all that unusual” and you feel better.

MCR get this more than most bands because alot of their songs begin on very hard topics and appreciate the fact that things are tough but tend to end very triumphantly (particularly the Black Parade, although its not my favourite album I must admit).
So listening to a song like that when you’re blue for example:
a) Relates to you, makes you feel less alone
b) Lifts your spirits, sends out a positive image like “you can get through this, dont give up”

And when you’re depressed enough to think seriously about suicide its the tiny details that really make a huge impact, something that is hard to grasp unless you’ve experienced it.

Honestly, though, Gerard would never have even thought about creating a rock opera unless he’d heard some of rock operas and albums created by the artists who are considered to be the people that were essential in the development of rock music. i.e., Pink Floyd’s The Wall, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, and Queen’s A Night At The Opera. Hell, I’m pretty sure that Gerard himself would admit that Bowie is the far superior all around musician, singer, songwriter, artist, performer, etc. Not to mention that Bowie has been around since the ’60’s which puts him into the category of rock veteran and legend. Oh, and Ray ain’t that great when it comes to guitar above average, but nothing amazing…He basically copied Brian May from Queen’s style on The Black Parade, which is probably why the album doesn’t suck.

What do I know about vocals sucking? I know all the makings of a good voice, and Gerard’s voice = crappy. See, most people know at least what a vocal range is, and Gerard likely has none or very little.
