The Long Winters - Putting The Days To Bed

The Long Winter’s Putting The Days To Bed is one of the few albums released this year I’d call a masterpiece. John Roderick and company make fine indie pop encompassing a wide array of influences that builds strongly on their previous effort, Ultimatum EP.

The album doesn’t do many new things musically but that is one of its many endearing qualities. The songwriting seems to be influenced as much by the old school and Motown as it is modern day indie rock. Teaspoon, one of my favorite tracks, is a perfect example of the Motown influence. The entire album is full of big hooks that bury themselves inside your mind and refuse to leave. Lyrically the album is superb as well with Roderick’s incredibly sharp wit on glorious display. Each track, be it a mid-tempo number or a fast one keeps your attention from beginning to end.

This is a fantastic rock album, one of the years best. It should have the masses singing along and playing air guitar as much as I have. It releases July 25th on Barsuk Records.
