Metalunderground links Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation talking from stage about some christian metalcore kids jumping their guitar player in Maryland. Anyone know the other side of this story?

First, the incident the singer refers to was a year ago. Next, we do not know the full story, as Seth points out. Finally, the lead singer is very good at manipulating a crowd, he brings up an event that occured a year ago and manages to get the crowd’s blood boiling as they start the next song. If he wasn’t the lead singer for a band he could:
a. be a motivational speaker living in a van down by the river
b. be one of those guys protesting at G8 summits with a bullhorn and a skimask
c. a football coach, he could sure get the team fired up before they take the field
d. a good old fashioned fire and brimstone preacher
e. a politician, he can scream almost as well as Howard Dean
First of all, to David, wearing an Apples in Stereo t-shirt put in the Church of Pretentious (just kidding…slightly). Secondly, I found his jokes about hardcore dancing quite amusing. Thirdly, a lot of “Christian” hardcore kids that are part of a “scene” are total jerks and I’m starting to believe it may be an oxymoron. And there’s a difference between listening to Christian hardcore/metal and being a Christian hardcore kid. The number of Norma Jean, Underoath, and Zao shirts in a kid’s closet probably is a good indicator, just like the number of NIV and Strongarm shirts used to be.

Cattle Decapitation is a bOOOOOOOring goregrind band that only achieves a level of moderate notoriety because they’re a bunch of flaming animal rights activists.

If they were a real metal band their story would be about THEM beating up OTHER Christians… Or perhaps, it would just be them playing their boring ass music instead of having a protest rally onstage with a few songs thrown in.
I saw these guys the other week and stayed for about 40 seconds.

i’m IN Zao and I don’t have a problem with what he said in that speech because I agree with it.
I don’t know the whole story on the incident in question but I do know that Travis is an intelligent guy and wouldn’t open his mouth about it unless he felt strongly about the issue. The people involved in the incident must have made it clear what their “motivation” was to incite that kind of reaction out of him.
He even said in the speech that it was a small group of kids. I’m not trying to put words into Travis’ mouth because, like I said, I don’t know the whole story but he’s probably playing a show with Becoming The Archetype and Alethian because he doesn’t have a problem with them. Hell, if the kids had ZAO shirts on, he must not have TOO much of a problem because Cattle Decapitation usually comes to visit us when we play in San Diego and I even spoke with him about playing drums for them recently but couldn’t because of touring conflicts. So, I don’t think it’s based on “band shirts”
Saying you hate all christians is as stupid as saying you hate all black people. It’s really the same thing. I’m not a christian but I have no problem with a LOT of christians. There are some that I do. People are people. Most of them suck but there are good ones in all walks of life…
basically my point in posting this is
A) my band was mentioned and I felt the need to step in and say something because we have no problem with CD… in fact I personally REALLY like them… and I don’t want this escalating into a ZAO vs. Cattle Decapitation debate and B) because I think that putting this video up on You Tube is taking the incident out of context and starting arguements that are really quite pointless because none of us know the whole story

Cattle Decap are quite good and this only makes me respect them more. seriously, since when was metal made to DANCE to? Being a fan of real hardcore (like The Germs, Black Flag, The Weirdos, X, MDC, The Feederz, The Crucifucks, Dead Kennedys, etc.), it really is a shame to see how far these so-called “hardcore” bands have fallen. Listen, there have been great metal-hardcore crossover bands, like DRI, but bands like Zao and Black My Heart and Norma Jean have more in common with the lame hair metal bands than the above hardcore bands. I just want all this fake hardcore shit to end and all this dancing stuff to end. Even though Travis was preaching to the choir, it still is a valid and good arguement.

Jay, the music didn’t change. Real hardcore is still around (The Germs are playing tomorrow) but what gets to me is the bastardization of the music I love. Obviously, it’s not the biggest issue in the world, but to someone who was around when this kind of music was still raw and new, it angers me to see how far these bands have fallen. If you can’t understand people having a passion, it’s your own fault and there is no reason to try and invalidate my position.
“Real” and “bastardization” are wholly subjective terms when it comes to music. Every form of music is taken from something else. Hardcore is a bastardization of rock and roll, which is a bastardization of blues, which is a bastardization of Negro spirituals. How far back do you want to go to keep it crucial?

People just need to start respecting other people for who they are and what they believe. First of all, I don’t know how he would even know whether these people were Christians or not. And if they were trying to “jump” the band’s guitarist, then they obviously weren’t.
As for people complaining about “slam dancing” at “metal” shows, blame bands like TTEOTD who throw breakdowns in their songs in hopes that hardcore kids will like them.
I love a lot of today’s newer hardcore bands, but if you want to experiance a real show, you have to go to the roots.
See bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Sick Of It All live if you want to experiance some real hardcore.

If you have the mic, step, if you dont, then shut the fuck up.
This is Travis. That night was a couple weeks after the incident in VA,not a fucking year. People are stupid for not getting the story straight first before talking shit. The only thing I’m guilty of is going off of hearsay that A SHITLOAD of kids seemed to all have the same thing to say that night about what happened: “We know who did it, its this crew, and they’re a christian hardcore crew and they’re fucking idiots.” We believed em and they were probably right. I was talking about one group of kids. And it was not a “beatdown”. They bailed like cowards. I came back with a mallet and we went to find them and they were gone. Right after that Dillinger’s guitar player got his guitar stolen. I put that mallet through the back window of the dude that took off with it. They got the guitar back, by the way.
I was charged up that night and went off on stage about how much a joke “Christian hardcore” is and especially a crew made of them…hahaha… that’s rich.
Anyways, I’m against a religion that asks people to go against everything that makes them what they are. That’s all. Don’t want to get into it as long as all a Christian has to go off of is a book.
