Just go to the mall, brah.
Though it’s only been a week, I haven’t felt many of the repercussions of the mighty Punk Planet magazine’s demise. It’s strange in this internet-soaked world; if Pitchfork called it quits, thousands of hipsters wouldn’t even know what albums to buy each week. With Punk Planet closing, it seems it will have little to no effect.
Remember in the mid-90s, when all the bands we hung out with weren’t recording albums in soda-sponsored domes, and Japanese car companies didn’t sponsor the tours? A few folks started labels in their basements, a few kids toured the U.S. in bands, and some folks — like the Punk Planet crew — put out a zine. Magazine. Whatever. Back then it was thrilling to get your album reviewed in Punk Planet. Or even if it was a band you once played a show with. Or heard of. There was just something about seeing those band names in black and white, on newsprint, archived forever on like-minded music nerds bookshelves.
I’m not saying Punk Planet was the finest publication, and honestly I haven’t read a full issue in years. Maybe that’s the problem. Being wrapped up in the downloading of music, or instant streaming of singles on MySpace, or checking the headlines every day at Pitchfork/ Lambgoat/ Blabbermouth/ whatever … In all this the magazine industry has been hit hard, and eventually, they close up.
Disgruntled ex-Burnloungers, upset by the recent changes to the service, have joined with a new consultation company. The Buzzgrinder staff received the following email, proclaiming the death of Burnlounge and plugging the new company.
“You all know by now that the network marketing opportunity in Burnlounge is over. However, the fortune available to you in network marketing will continue to exist. The top networkers from Burnlounge are already positioning themselves in other companies to start building a lifetime of income. Many of them are now with us because we have been researching the industry for the past 16 years and have positioned ourselves in the companies which are here to stay!”
It goes on to offer a free consultation with a “professional networker.”
Celebrities typically have no trouble acquiring the latest gadgets prior to their release. That’s not the case, however, with the iPhone. Publicist Liz Rosenberg (Madonna, Liza Minnelli, Cher) recently told the L.A. Times of her difficulty getting an iPhone for Cher.
“Doesn’t winning Oscars, Grammys and Emmys entitle her to move to the front of the line?”

I’m trying hard to figure out what’s going on here, but I’m failing pretty badly.
Thursday have put aside their differences with Victory Records and will release a DVD/CD retrospective on the label.
.On a more personal note, many of you know that our parting with Victory was bitter on both sides and we’re taking this chance to put that behind us. That label really helped us get to where we are and we helped them to establish themselves as well… Tony’s passion for this project and his continued support of the band after all these years has helped to make this an easy decision.

Paul Brill is a New York City-based songwriter, performer, and film score composer. His latest release Harpooner has brought him much critical acclaim with its pleasant brew of guitar and piano rock, Radiohead-esque blips, and rich lyrical imagery. Justin Stover recently spoke with him about his work, recent projects, and humanitarian concerns. (more…)
Relient K’s bus engine caught fire while traveling to the Cornerstone Festival. The blaze quickly spread, substantially damaging both the bus and their trailer. Several personal items, merchandise, and instruments also suffered damage. Frontman Matt Thiessen commented on the incident by saying:
“We were just gawking and kind of laughing. It was all so cinematic. There was the night sky with all this light and this fireman kneeling and hacking at the top of the bus with an ax.”
(thanks, Evan)
