Just as the Buzzgrinder staff has slowed down, it seems the CD buying public has, too.
“Variety has the latest music numbers from Nielsen Soundscan on music sales from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. In 2007, 83.9 million albums were sold, down 21.4 million from last year.”
Still want a job at a record label in 2008?
I do!
I would make money on merch sales, as I would drop the prices from 30 dollar shirts to $15, then make sure album costs were way down, and oh man….
It’d be huge.
i keep the used cds in business
yeah i want to still work for a record label in 2008. Dude, id work for Tooth & Nail and help them sign really good bands, than won’t flop like Fighting Jacks, All Wound Up, Terminal, Run Kid Run, Royal, Discover America, Ace Troubleshooter( the emo days) and etc. Hell yah i’d sign stuff that would sell. Bring It On!
Not gonna lie, it’s probably because everyone buys gift cards.
Did they take into account digital sales? Probably not significant. Not very gifty.
Why don’t labels just stop spending millions on recording? I think Tooth and Nail is smart for having their own studio “The compound” and their own producer, Aaron Sprinkle. Luckily for them he’s great at making everything sound generic, bland and somewhat appealing to the youth group/indie/metal? masses.
of course everyone still wants a job at a label. not because it’s a viable business model or because it presents career stability.
it’s because everyone wants to be cool. how lame.
Sean, i’m already cool. i just want to work for a label for fun.
I’d rather just start my own.

Traditional labels should die.. or change to a non-traditional label.
The game is changing and if they don’t change the fact is that they will die. It’s called the free-market.
why’s everyone obsessed with t&n? let it go, they’re dead.
It’s true. I only got two CDs for Christmas this year. So there you go. Blame it on all the people who didn’t get me CDs for Christmas. If you want to fix it, leave a comment and I’ll give you my address and what CDs I want.
if you’re looking for fun, then a record label is the last place you want to be. granted, there are good times, but especially when you’re talking about a major label, fun is like a four letter word.
“than won’t flop like…Run Kid Run”
RKR sold 30K of their debut album. Both the band and T&N is very pleased with that amount. That’s twice the amount Underoath sold of their T&N/SS debut in it’s initial run. T&N set a 10K minimum for UO to sell before they were allowed to start to plan their next record.
Not every band is going to be successful. On major labels 8 out of every 10 bands fail to sell at least 100K units of a single record and 9 out of 10 bands don’t recoup their debt.
Plus, T&N would rather sign a band than risk another Dashboard Confessional. Chris of FSF asked permission to do a solo record and T&N said he could release elsewhere. That’s been their biggest multi-million dollar regret…
That’s assuming that DC would be successful if he stayed on T&N. It’s hard to judge those things.
Remember, this is the fault of PC users.
i’m with jay on that one. you never know. i honestly think that being with T&N would have hurt him at that point in time. at that point, they hadn’t become consistently successful at selling bands in non-christian markets. they’re better at it now, but there were a few bands that signed to T&N around that time hoping to get some mainstream push, but ended up getting disappointed.
I stopped buying cds and started buying vinyl. (Which often comes with a code to download the cd, or comes with the cd.)
i’m with andrew.
Hey! so nice discussion , BUT NEW YEAR is coming, how to celetrate this wonderful day?
