Gene Simmons Thinks Every Kid’s Face Should Be Sued

Gene Simmons won’t be putting out any new KISS material anytime soon because of the state that the record industry is in.

“The record industry doesn’t have a f*cking clue how to make money. It’s only their fault for letting foxes get into the henhouse and then wondering why there’s no eggs or chickens. Every little college kid, every freshly-scrubbed little kid’s face should have been sued off the face of the earth. They should have taken their houses and cars and nipped it right there in the beginning. Those kids are putting 100,000 to a million people out of work. How can you pick on them? They’ve got freckles. That’s a crook. He may as well be wearing a bandit’s mask.”

Does anyone under the age of 40 want another KISS record to exist?

LOL. Another aging rocker who thinks people actually care what they think. I think he’s actually pissed because he knows if he puts out another KISS record, no one will buy *or* download it. You’ve milked your cheesy band for all its worth, Gene.

didn’t radiohead just prove that record companies are obsolete?

    i wonder what lars thinks…

    Dear recording industry.

    Put out music WORTH buying.

Kids who want to buy CDs, will buy CDs, and kids that would rahter download music, will download music.

If the record industry is thriving from record sales, they need to find more reasons for people to buy records. Better, more thought out packaging, packaging with DVDs, anything other than the ordinary.

Nope, record companies are nowhere near obsolete. Radiohead even just signed to 2 different labels proving even they need record labels.

The only thing Radiohead just proved is that an established artist, with a very dedicated following, can pay for their own recording and release it digitally on their own. This wouldn’t have been half the success if it hadn’t 1. Been Radiohead or 2. Had been given so much press (but then again this is related to #1)

I got the solution for the record industry… but they won’t do it, because they want their cake and eat it, too.

Wait about 8 months to put anything out, then…
    Stop putting out music digitally.

    No more CDs.
    No more videos.
    No more downloads.
    Cassettes and LPs only.

You know why they won’t do that, even if it means saving their sorry, sad, and bleeding out industry?
Because they won’t make as much money if people will just, “start buying CDs again.”

CDs were given the green light because they cost about one tenth the price of a cassette or LP… and if they were to switch back to analog product from here on out, they wouldn’t be able to charge any more for the music… because they’ve spent so much time investing in the digital age and telling us how awesome it is. At this point, with bit rates and all, what does it matter?

    None more hosed.

they saids tapes would kill the music industry, I think raidohead confirmed that you’re better off on you own (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah proved it)

  17. On 11/14/07 1:04 PM, tAlex said:

For each band like Clap Your Hands who’ve made a name for themselves without any record label involvement there are about 50,000 others that have proven you’ll go nowhere, as a start up band, without a label.

It is getting easier these days, but Radiohead is not an example of how every band can make it on their own.

You claimed proof right after giving a counterexample to your proof. Weird.

  19. On 11/14/07 2:11 PM, tAlex said:

I just mean that, as I’ve said before it worked for Radiohead because they are Radiohead. Even that couldn’t be completely successful without a label so they licensed In Rainbows to ATO (US) and XL Recordings (Outside US0).

Just because Clap Your Hands has “proven” it’s a possibility, don’t make it a feasible belief that every band can bring themselves to fame without a label.

Yeah, Jered ‘proved’ that it’s possible to lose 245 lbs by only eating at Subway, but that certainly doesn’t mean that it’s feasible or economically possible for every single dieter to do?

I’m not exactly supporting the way that most record labels operate, but they bring to the table many possibilities and opportunities bands cannot provide for themselves.

  20. On 11/14/07 2:30 PM, Jamison said:

Oh wow! I didn’t mean to evoke such a response, in fact I’m rather ignorant (not completely, but I’ll leave this to other “experts”) to the subject. I was just commenting on your use of the word “proven”.

Don’t feel bad at all. I’m sorry if it felt like an attack.

It’s just that too many people, including major publication writers’ declarations that the record label as being completely obsolete are very much pre-mature.

I guess it was pretty bad to contradict myself. :)

it’s obviously not feasible to think that any old band can have a huge success and make an assload of money without a label. but it is feasible to think that a band can use all of the money that they were going to spend on pressing CDs and use it for advertising (particularly not so traditional advertising), and then make a money from it…even if they aren’t radiohead.

advertising, combined with touring and having music that doesn’t suck, pays off! not millions, but if you’re in a band because you want to be rich and famous, you’re screwed in the first place.

record labels are dead for one reason: niche markets. the big labels have a paradigm that does not allow them to consider niche markets. everything is moving toward niche markets. it’s a pretty universally agreed upon idea in marketing circles. but the labels won’t restructure to allow for it…and they can’t really, you know.

really, the crux of the matter is how you want to define success. if you can record an album for $1000, spend $2000 on advertising, then sell 1,000 albums digitally, you’re golden.
