Interview: Mark Redding of The Shackeltons

1. Tell us about the new CD coming out.
Echo Park, Los Angeles. That’s where we recorded. At Tom Biller’s studio, “Beer Wine and Fish”. Sam Jones (the Wilco documentary, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”) and Tom Biller (Silversun Pickups, Karen O, Sean Lennon, Kanye West) produced the CD. Echo Park seems to be the place for nifty music these days. Tom is good friends with John Brion - Tom engineered his movie soundtracks, along with Fiona Apple, ect - and the ship studio (home of Earlimart, Sea Wolf).

2. I’ve seen you a few times here in NYC and each time the buzz gets a little better. Whats next for you guys?
More buzz hopefully. We are planning to do a tour with the likes of Anathallo, Eagle Seagull, and Arizona. The High Strung have also shown interest in the tour. We were just a MySpace feature band. They put us beside Ja Rule. We were pleased. We got 100,000 listens and a very large dose of new friends.

3. You do fall down a lot, and shake, and do all sorts of fun stuff at your shows. Do people at shows ever talk to you about that?
Sometimes they ask me if it hurt; “Did it hurt when you fell on your back without catching yourself?” No. Adrenaline. I’m the baby of eight kids. I need attention. So I fall down. It was actually a coping method. I didn’t know what to do with myself in front of people in our first big show, so I fell backwards and flopped like a fish a few times.

4. What’s been some music you’ve been listening to lately?
Otis Redding. Earlimart. Sondre Lerche. Manchester Orchestra. Al Green. Old Bob Dylan. National Public Radio’s This American Life. Quiet orchestra music.

5. Are you ready for the holidays?
I am making two pumpkin pies tonight. A can of pumpkin, and pre-baked pie crust. Tomorrow I make the turkey in my little oven and walk it over to my moms who lives half a block away. I like to smell food cooking in my apartment at least once a year.
It feels good to smell the turkey and turn on the parades and channel surf in my flannel pj’s. I dig that.
Christmas, it’s very simple for me. A small meal at my moms. No big gift giving. We keep it to a nice meal. No expectations. Just nice food and a day off work.

The Shackeltons are playing NYCs Knitting Factory Saturday, Nov 24.
