I don’t post here much any more, being the editor of one of the unholy spawn of Our Fearless Leader’s sclerotic yet productive gray matter. The sheer velocity of my useless opinion, though, qualifies me to pass unwarranted judgement on your personal music interests log into the admin console and create another mock-worthy personal top 10.
You gadflies.
10. Dethklok – Dethalbum
A competent death metal album making fun of death metal, from a fictional death metal band that went on tour in real life. I don’t think this could ever happen again in this particular instance of a universe. The power of statistical analysis compels you (to listen)!
9. The Chariot – The Fiancée
Didn’t like their first two releases nor their live show, but this one pushes all the right buttons for me. It’s the junior slam.
8. Benea Reach – Monument Bineothan
This was technically released in 2006, but only saw US distribution this year, so it counts in my book. Detuned and dense metal. Experimental without being noodley or flaccid; there’s plenty of power behind this. And their videos are actually good. I only know about them from a recommendation, but I know with more promo they could go places.
7. Mae – Singularity
Cry about it.
6. UVERworld – Bugright
The Japanese version of an Anberlin/Linkin Park lovechild. Is that enough comment material for you? There will be more to choose from…
5. Beat Crusaders – EpopMAKING
This is what happens when Reggie and the Full Effect throw beer bottles filled with grape soda at a Descendents show.
4. Baroness – The Red Album
Buy this for Baizley’s artwork if their tricky rhythm stoner-indie-something bombast doesn’t appeal to you. Their big, raw riffs and Stonehenge vocals will reverberate in your head ad nauseum because they scooped out your brains while you were unconscious.
3. High and Mighty Color – San
Another weirdo Japanese band that can’t decide if it’s metal or rock or pop. I should care about such a privation of identity, but their hair distracts me.
2. Life In Your Way – Waking Giants
I’ve heard talk that they are the second coming of Strongarm. Maybe, but I can’t stop listening to this album, seeing them live, or name-dropping these dudes long enough to get into the argument.
1. Holy Roman Empire – The Longue Duree
Okay, I know half of you indie retards secretly pine to siphon out Pete Wentz’ intestinal gases for the Clandestine shrine back home, blasting Paramore’s latest single all the while. Now you can listen to power pop-rock in the car with your bearded Pabst-wielding friends without being embarrassed by stupid lyrics or limp-wristed riffage. Emily Schambra’s classically trained vocals round out the driving powerhouse instrumentation behind her, formed and shoved out the speakers by ex-members of a zillion decent to great bands you’ve heard of. Get into them now before they get big and you’re forced to hate them.
I type too much.
I’m suprised to see The Chariot on there. Their newest album didn’t seem much (if any) different than the last two.
But Holy Roman Empire is in a good spot.
Oh look at me. I’m Jay and I like music from places besides America. Love it or leave it, bro! hahah
dethklok! that is another album I need to pick up…
Benea Reach…it’s no “Motivation Song” but it still rules.
sammy could be the best, the best…
Now this is a list I could actually get behind. Maybe not all of it, maybe not my personal top ten, but much closer to the mark.
hahaha the motivation song…love that album…still brings the metalic laughs…
glad to see benea reach on there…great band thats not gettin a lot of recognition…
great list…Holy Roman and Baroness are def in my top this year…
Go forth and die. \mm/
Nice Baroness love.
Benea Reach + two Japanese bands ≠ Multicultural Hipster
(but… might get you a hot Swedish chick’s number)
Anyone hear the Bloodhorse E.P.? Musically I’d call them Baroness with more of the breath of Hell. But nowhere near as badass artwork.
The Bloodhorse EP was definitely worth the listen, for sure. Not in my top albums of the year, but still a solid release.
wasnt selfmindead supposed to be the eventual successor to refused?
Other than Baroness and LIYW, I have to hate on this list.
Thank God I’m not a hipster. Haha.
Actually, Beat Crusaders are Japanese as well. And their lyrics are Engrish-tastic.
the new baroness record is good, especially for stoners. but hardley worthy of being in the top 10 for the year. then again the other 9 on your list are much much worse.
Major props for including the underrated Benea Reach, and I guess I really need to check out Holy Roman Empire!
Also Jay, did you hear the new album by the Japanese band Maximum The Hormone?
you’re a sweet kid, jay.
magnum, yes I have heard them. I like the music, but the vocals turn me off at times, so I don’t really pursue it.
Same thing with Nightmare. The music is awesome, but the vocals kill it for me. Good band though.
Give Maximum another listen. It took me a few songs but I really dig it now. Japanese or not, it just sounds like fun.
There you go… name-droppin the Animé again.
I’d also recommend giving MtH another chance, but then again, I actually was pretty entertained by the vocals at first glance.
Okay, fine. I’ll listen to them again. You turds.
Benea Reach is my new favorite band because of this list. I had no idea the Selfmindead guys were still around. Salute.
We please to aim.
But there’s too many positive responses to this list.
Something has gone awry.
yes… it’s pity sympathy because we all know seth’s list was better.
Eastern Youth is the only Japanese band I wanna listen to.
Jay, I wish you and your list had never been born.
That should even it out a bit.
CHA CHA CHA CHARIOT!
=~(
While none of these made my list, I’ll give you props for being the list I agree with the most. I still need to check out Baroness though.
Howard, FTW
“I’m Jay and I listen to chugga chugga music and everyone at Buzzgrinder loves me.” That’s my impression of Jay.
add in some voice cracks and a Cats reference, and you’ve got him pat.
UVERwright is pretty sick
correction…UVERworld….it’s like 8 in the morning (really, it’s close to 2) and i’m barely hanging in there while i type. good stuff though.
I don’t get it. =(
[...] This was a good year for me in terms of the harder offerings. In 2007 I kinda had to do the ice-cream-genre-barrel-scrape-around because a lot of metallish releases didn’t hit the sweet spot. While that sounds like a [...]
