Since I started Buzzgrinder back in 2001, I’m the first one to post my personal Top 10 list of 2007, since you folks have asked nicely for it, and will no doubt rip me to shreds for my horrible taste in music.
It’s funny - friends who realize I run the site often ask, “Wow, you must really like My Chemical Romance!” While I like their one “teenager” song or whatever it’s called, I can’t say I’m a fan. In fact, almost everything we write about make me want to vomit. Just kidding. Sort of.
Anyways… here’s my list:
10. Aqualung – Memory Man
Big sounds and dreamy synth are good enough for me.
9. Bloodjinn – This Machine Runs On Empty
Good album from a band that’s been around as long as I have. And isn’t named after a book!
8. Dear And The Headlights – Small Steps, Heavy Hooves
I remember hearing these guys from a demo they sent me. Glad they were able to put out a well recorded gem.
7. Means – Sending You Strength
Usually not a fan of singing+hardcore, but this works for me. A weekly listen.
6. Kasier Chiefs – Yours Truly, Angry Mob
I can hum half of this album. In my sleep. That’s how catchy it is.
5. Mae – Singularity
OMG. MAE?! Yes. I like the synth, the songwriting, and the guitar tones. Get over it.
4. The Forms – TBD
I cheated with this album; I took it with me on my trip to Italy and listened to it non-stop, so listening to it again makes me feel like I’m back in Italy.
3. The Dillinger Escape Plan – Ire Works
An insane album, complex and radio-friendly in parts, old-school Dillinger in others. I love it.
2. Battles – Mirrored
Being a Helmet fan I knew I had to check out this band. Oh, and ex members of Don Caballero? Incredible album.
1. Queens Of The Stone Age – Era Vulgaris
Smooth and dreamy, a riot to listen to. This album was 2007 for me.
WORD to that list. Your top 4 are in my batch of favorites too!
It’s great to know that you are a QOTSA fan….your bad-ass points just increased! (+10,000)
and I thought I’d be mocked openly for my choices. Oh wait, it’s early yet. I’m sure in the next 35 comments I’ll feel the wrath. Thanks, j!
top two are good… though QotSA probably won’t make my top-10. Battles will, though.
Good choices.
I am a fan of most of these bands.
seth just lot his biting edge, and has become a nancy.
QOTSA was really good, but not my top 10. that Mae, i actually bought and is pretty good but not 10 worthy. “isn’t named after a book” lol.
Other than most of the bands on this list, your choices suck! You have about a 15% horrible taste in music.
How can I have a percentage in something such as “taste?”
BLOODJINN! Fuck yes. Amazing album.
I couldn’t get into this QOTSA record at all though, mostly because of the crappy production/mixing which sounds like a fart in a can. All except “Make it Wit Chu.” That song is cool.
I’ve been reading lots of top 10’s recently, and yours makes me happiest, I think. It reminds me that I did used to listen to loud music and I probably still should…
Too many “hushed vocals” over “lush orchestrations” in my playlists lately.
you really like to be dreamy
Seth I don’t understand how DEP is there and not BTBAM
QOTSA at No. 1? Outstanding. Fantastic choice. I absolutely that album. It’s either 1 or 2 on my list as well.
I like the list but
Agreed.
SOOOOO glad to see Battles on there…Incredible album…even better live…
Yes Battles.
Double Yes Don Caballero.
It’s official: Seth’s top 10 is much better than Buzzgrinder’s. In fact, I will probably put your top 10 list at number 1 in my top 10 list of bloggers’ top 10 lists of 2007.
dude…dear and the headlights have been playing nonstop on my ipod…thanks to buzzgrinder.
very happy to see means on here.
i like bloodjinn EVEN THOUGH they are as old as seth and aren’t named after a book
you know what? i enjoy the latest Mae. i like their new sound. but then again, i thought The Everglow was a bit melodramatic for my taste.
When I was 15 and first learned power chords, I formed a band called Aqualung. I changed the name because I found out it’s a freaking Jethro Tull song.
For those that don’t understand the Dillinger Escape Plan vs. Between the Buried and Me: I never bought the album, and I’m not on the Victory press list
If either of those two changed, maybe the list would be different.
Surprised to see Bloodjinn on there, but good to know I’m not the only person to like them.
as if seth knows anything wikipedia says about don caballero ( hahaha )
i/m really trying to push his buttons, but i can’t. well played, seth, well played.
Travis - don’t you have a Radiohead import single to buy? haha
Bloodjinn is cool. A friend of mine played bass for them briefly a few years ago.
Seth, your list has been getting a lot of praise, I feel the need to say something really nasty about it to keep with the Buzzgrinder spirit.
Yes, please do. Knock me off my high horse.
It would be pretty funny to get a horse high.
seth,
the fact that you have mae and aqualung on your top ten means you probably should be going to your TV to turn on TRL right about now..
kanye was the shit, i promise you.
Nah, I’m watching Cavs vs. Mavs right now, sucka. Better entertainment.
Agree totally about Means Seth. Means for a metalcore with singing band made pretty much the best metalcore I had heard in a while. So yeah good stuff. All the other ones I like too. I do beliebe Coheed’s No World for Tomorrow or Between The Buried and Me’s Colors should have been added. And I am normally a guy for the smaller lesser known bands but thoes two bands blew me away AGAIN! so yeah my two cents….
No ETID? Seriously? WOOOW
Attn labels: send me BTBAM, ETID, and other bands with long names. Maybe then I can fall in love with them and confirm everyone else’s top 10 lists.
if you have a semi-popular music blog, maybe the labels will send you cds…
so wheres BG fit in?
The new QOTSA isn’t that great. I’d say it’s probably their weakest material to date. Most of these albums I’ve never listened to though. However, will someone please explain to me what the big deal about Mae is. I’ve never liked them, even when they were on T&N.
@ Travis: Some already do. Most don’t. Hence, some labels and their bands got mentioned here. Others didn’t. Oh well.
@ Anthony: I will explain what the big deal about Mae is. They put out an album. The gray blob of tissue inside my skull liked it. So it’s on my top 10 list. Easy.
Dear and the Head Lights is a must see band. The most entertaining band I have seen live in a very long time!!
“I will explain what the big deal about Mae is. They put out an album. The gray blob of tissue inside my skull liked it. So it’s on my top 10 list. Easy.”
I didn’t mean just you. It seems like everyone I talk to thinks Mae is so amazing, and I just don’t hear it. Ah well.
Anthony, I think YOU’RE amazing. I’m starting my own thing.
taste % = backhanded compliment disguised as scenester slam. Devisive and unfounded, perfect for buzzgrinder.
New Dillinger rules.
Queens of the Stone Age ftw.
And I’m not just saying that because I have the word ‘Queen’ in my name.
Hey! so nice discussion , BUT NEW YEAR is coming, how to celetrate this wonderful day? you love to try something new?
