The Bad Spellers – Keep On Shining!

Tokyo’s The Bad Spellers return with Keep On Shining!, their second release on Post Records. The keyboard pop of their previous effort is firmly in tact, with several subtle changes that add to the record charm. The most welcome change would be the increasing vocal presence of keyboardist Yasuko. The adorable vocal interplay between her and guitarist/vocalist Tony is something of which the album could have used more. The two tackle lyrical themes involving family (Mao Kun), finding love in foreign lands (Diggity Densha Blues, We Don’t Like To Swim) and the sting of losing hair (The Ungrateful Sojourn of Nomadic Follicles) in an incredibly cheerful fashion. Listening to the album could easily remind one of the kitschy, international pop released by Minty Fresh Records in the late 90′s.
