The Austin, TX-based widows&orphans spent the better part of the 2000s touring and marking their territory on the general indie-rock scene. Apparently, they’ve cordoned off a big chunk of land for themselves, as Blood and Ink Records noticed and snatched them up. They have a CD, Everything Is Gold, which consists mostly of re-recorded songs with some new material, coming out in February on Doll House Records. I sat down with their drummer, Eric, at my computer desk and talked to him a little bit about their music typed out a few questions for him to answer.
1. You cite a lot of diverse influences in your official bio. Is it hard to write a cohesive song when there’s so much you want to do? How does songwriting come about, generally?
Yeah, it is really hard to make sense of it all. Everyone has their input and everyone does their share. Sometimes it comes about and sometimes it doesn’t. I don’t like to force inspiration.
2. Related to this, you have put out five releases prior to signing to Blood and Ink, three of which are EPs - all within the span of three years. Do you find yourself changing so much that you feel the need to record often?
I suppose so. Well, with how short all the EPs were we didn’t really have a chance to do much in them. You can’t establish a bands sound entirely in three songs, and EPs were all we could afford to record so it gave us the option to change a lot between them. I’d like to think we’ll change and grow perpetually and never really settle down for good. We really try to stick to our roots while still doing something new…well new-ish since there isn’t much “new” out there.
3. Is your band name taken from the verse in James or the typographical issue? You can say it’s from both. I won’t mind.
Haha, well it sort of is from both. We found it through the typographical issue and the biblical verses in the same day. We just realized that it worked so well for us on all levels. Biblically we are all widows and orphans of Christ waiting to return to him in heaven. But also a lot of what we write about is about what has been left behind and what there is to look forward to, so in typography, widows and orphans represent us as well. And in the long run, the name just sounds really sweet.
4. Are thunderstorms in Texas really as big as everyone says they are?
No, I don’t think we even get thunderstorms..much less rain. What’s insane are the dynamite that blow up next to my house once a month!
5. Besides a CD on Blood & Ink and more touring, what are the future plans for widows&orphans?
We need to get in shape. Maybe watch a pilates exericise video!
Get in shape? They need to shave them beards! haha
They have beard because of the dynamite, maybe?
I like the kirby. but the new name is just as cool.
Beard overload.
New cd is going to be fun…
Anyone else notice that EVERY metal/hardcore band all have beards these days?
everyone at some point in there life should grow a beard, its like a passage to be a man.
i can’t grow a beard.
A few years ago for the winter I grew a sweet beard like that guy on the right. I felt like eating rabbit meat by a campfire and listening to “Cat Scratch Fever”.
no comments about these guys music? only their beards??
