Stephin Merritt’s Bubblegum Commercial?

Stephin Merritt, acclaimed frontman of The Magnetic Fields, has apparently lent his musical stylings to a Wrigley’s commercial for Extra, Orbit and Eclipse. It hasn’t been confirmed that it’s him yet, but judge for yourself. [link, Idolator]

Interview: Trever Keith Of Face To Face

Most people know Trever Keith as the frontman of the acclaimed band Face To Face. What they don’t know is that his side projects have been featured on a number of Hollywood soundtracks, he runs a record label on the side, and he once took My Chemical Romance out on tour. Mr. Keith took the time to talk to us about the upcoming Face To Face reunion tour, his new solo project and how the punk rock community is just an illusion. (more…)

REVIEW: Henry Rollins @ 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA

The long line to get into the historical 40 Watt Club forced me to listen to two distinctively contrasting conversations. Conversations that — on any normal day — would force me to yell out in justified anger to end the annoying banter. But as the saying goes: Never anger the people in line, you don’t know how long your going to have to deal with them. In front of me was a cackle of German tourist, and I write cackle because they bickered, joked and gossiped like a group of blond 14-year-old cheerleaders (note: having Euros doesn’t make one-self less petty). Behind me were the expected punk rock avengers; they were discussing which one of them was going to school Mr. Rollins first for the supposed errors in his work and life choices. One of them said, “I’m going to ask what he really did for punk rock, and he’ll say ‘nothing,’ because he knows it.” (more…)

Maylene and the Sons of Disaster Lose Half Their Band, Beards

Losing half of your lineup usually isn’t a good thing. Maylene and the Sons of Disaster recently lost Lee Turner, Scott Collum and Josh Williams but have picked up Chad Huff, Kelly Scott Nunn and Matt Clark from the waiver wire (sports term, kids. stay with me).

“They have been long time friends of ours and some are former band-mates. You might know them from their work in Underoath, Further Seems Forever, Sleeping By the Riverside and Gods. Josh Cornutt remains in the band but being a newlywed he is currently at home spending time with his wife (and writing for our next record).”

Did we really need to be reminded of Gods? Anyways, comments ensue and singer Dallas responds:

“I have been seeing alot of comments about the new guys and their image. If the only reason you like us is cause of an image then we are not the band for you… all of you who have a problem with nikes, and guys with out beards all I can say is GROW UP! Music is not a image it is our lifestyle.”

And it seems that MATSODnewsnetwork was at full force during all this. Reports new member Kelly Scott:

“Please we beg you guys to look past our “looks” and “goofiness” and allow us to show you a new side of us.”

The new side? I hope it doesn’t look like alleged Perez Hilton IM conversations. Or the 2004 side of the band.

Cool Hand Luke Member Burnt In Grease Fire

In the midst of recording for their upcoming release, The Sleeping House, Casey McBride of Cool Hand Luke was recently dealt an interesting injury.

A couple of weeks after we got home, tragedy struck. Casey, our bass player, was badly burned in a grease fire whilst attempting to make doughnuts. He had third degree burns on his left hand and arm and on his feet. He was in the hospital for almost a week and had to have skin grafts. If that isn’t bad enough, he doesn’t have health insurance, so he’s got some pretty steep medical bills. We’ll be letting you know how you can help with that if you want to.

Vocalist Mark Nicks continues:

“Cool Hand” jokes, flame tattoo jokes, and “Fires of Life” jokes aside, Casey’s accident has rendered him unable to play bass for a while. So we’ve been taking a break and trying to figure out what’s next.

Perez Hilton to do A&R for Warner Bros.

The folks at Underwire report that Warner Bros. may make infamous annoying guy celebrity gossip guru Perez Hilton their next A&R guy.

“With a readership approaching 3 million a month, Hilton’s picks, which have included Wired faves Swedish electro-pop artist Robyn and French DJ-duo Justice, have the potential to effortlessly reach an audience most music marketers can only dream about.”

Perez claims he’ll be able to remain objective with his recommendations in spite of the kickbacks. I’d rather get my fashion advice from these guys than ever take my musical cues from an annoying celeb scenester getting money from a label that brought us such gems as Linkin Park, The Goo Goo Dolls and L’il Flip.

Andrew Bird Collaborates With Dianogah

Lyricist/violinist/whistler extraordinaire Andrew Bird (I wonder how many times he’s been called that) has been collaborating with Chicago post-rockers Dianogah for their new album.

Last year, Bird and Dianogah teamed up for a Daytrotter session, and tomorrow night, February 28, they’ll perform together at a Barack Obama benefit show at the Hideout in Chicago. But the collaboration has now stretched to Dianogah’s new album. Unpronounceably titled qhnnnl, the record features Bird’s contributions on four songs: “a breaks b”, “andrew jackson”, “sprinter”, and “es posible fuego?”. Yes, all of that is supposed to be in lower case.

The Daytrotter session showcases a bit of their work together, along with some discussion on the creative process from Mr. Bird. I recommend A Breaks B in all its warm, instrumental goodness.

Amber Pacific Singer Quits to be a Principal

Matt Young leaves Amber Pacific and writes a gem of a ‘goodbye’ letter to the fans.

“I would like to take this time to encourage all of you to never give up on your dreams. Now this may sound hypocritical, seeing as how I’m leaving the music industry, but my dream lives on. “

A dream of health benefits and 401(k)? YES WE CAN!

I think Batman said it best when he said, “It’s not who you are on the inside, but what you do that defines you.” With that in mind, I’m now going to shift my efforts to going back to school and pursuing a career in public education as a principal, in hopes that I can better prepare future generations for what lies ahead.”

Amen, brother. I like using comic book characters to illustrate major life changing events, too. Especially when knowing some school administrator will Google your name in a few years and read this post.

Oh, and the band apologizes for over-exposure:

“We hope that this news does not push you away from our music in any way and hope that with a new voice we will be able to reach new fans and possibly even old fans who have grown tired of us coming to your city every other month because we certainly did our fair share of that.”

Bruce Fitzhugh Still Loves Van Halen

Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice writes about his love for Van Halen on the Headbangers Blog.

“Anyway, in 1984, Van Halen was it. I remember hearing about the “Hot for Teacher” video before I had seen it. And it was described to me in every detail, from Eddie playing his solo while walking down the library table to how kid actors portrayed the Van Halen dudes. I probably watched MTV for hours on end just to catch it.”

And now we have YouTube and you can probably watch 18 parodies of this video. And someone poop in a cup. We’ve really come a long way, huh?

“The irony is that I did get to see my first metal concert that same year and only because my friend’s mom agreed to take us so I had adult supervision. It was Judas Priest on their “Defenders of the Faith” tour.”

What was your first metal concert? Mine was Life Of Agony at City Gardens in N.J. (I think. I was young), even though they weren’t really metal.
