I’ll be out all night long, pulling double duty this evening. I’m going to catch Justin Townes Earle with The Swells earlyish at St. Francis of Assisi, then heading to a loosely Halloween-themed show with No Kids, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone and Pomegranates at one of the coolest places for cool kids to see cool shows in town: The Pour Haus.

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Graceland (Paul Simon cover)
Pomegranates - Thunder Meadow

There was plenty of buzz about Drink Up Buttercup during CMJ. And why wouldn’t there be? We’ve been fans for a while, and it’s about time more people get on board.
In other DUB news, the Philly natives will be releasing a seven-inch UK single Nov. 10. I know, I know, you’re in the U, S and A (unless, of course, you are in the UK). Why do you care? You’re not going to pay to get the import, right?
Here’s why you should care: The band has provided us all with an entertaining, fairly hilarious Nintendo-oriented takeoff on The Deer Hunter for the A-side, Mr. Pie Eyes.
We’ve also got a track, Young Ladies, that’ll be on the band’s upcoming album. How’s that for an embarassment of DUB riches?

Things have really been hopping for Ben Sollee. First he gets some notice from NPR. Then he gets into a pseudo-beef with Kanye. He attracts the attention of fellow Louisville native Jim James. The My Morning Jacket frontman contributes some vocals to Sollee’s new EP, Something Worth Keeping. So things are certainly looking up.
And now he’s heading out on tour. It kicks off Saturday night at The 930 Listening Room, with Bootsie Anne opening. If you see him, check out his wares. Yours truly had a hand in them. So if they suck, you know who to blame.

Popeater has a nice little gallery up of musicians and other famous people in their Halloween costumes. Because they’re people just like you and me. But better! My personal favorite is this one of Hanson with Heidi Klum. Taylor Hanson appears to be a guy in a jean jacket holding a decapitated gorilla head, Heidi Klum is gold lady with jam in her teeth, Tiny Hanson is a fairy, and Ogre Hanson is one of those bees from Saturday Night Live circa the ’70s.
What are you going to be for Halloween? Or are you too cool for that now?
Pinback’s Terrin Durfey has passed away after a long battle with cancer. His family is accepting donations for medical costs here. Buzzgrinder’s thoughts are with his family and friends.

Hinder - Take It to the Limit
Release date: Nov. 4, 2008
[amazon.com]
Apparently Hinder already has the indie rock and metal kids on lockdown, so now the band is striving to rope in both the adult rock and hip-hop cultures in tandem. Does it make the grade?
When Tooth and Nail employees aren’t reading Buzzgrinder, they’re fending off zombie interns. Working at a record label these days is very dangerous.

Mastodon will be releasing Crack The Skye in early 2009. It’ll be 50 minutes long and includes song titles like Quintessence and Ghost of Karelia. Ooooh. Spooky!
And hey — if you’re already planning a summer European vacation in 2009, be sure to catch Mastodon opening up for Metallica.
Stephin Merritt, the genius behind The Magnetic Fields and numerous other bands, is the inspiration behind French shoe company Bluedy’s new footwear line aptly titled Stephin. This is only one of two lines inspired by a musician; the other being Jimi Hendrix.
This I guess is a great honor, but Stephin Merritt’s music doesn’t really illicit in me a vision of something elves would wear to a child custody hearing.
