Jay: You order a pizza, it arrives and you pay the normal price. You take a bite, swallow, and some of your teeth crack. You’re in some pain, but you notice that there’s platinum plating under all that mozzarella. And so it is with this release: You have some idea of what you’re going to get because it’s on Facedown, but it turns out to be something rather unexpected. At first, you might be a little ticked, but you just paid $10 for a twelve-inch diameter of a profitable, eBayable metal. In this case the surprise is a pleasant and chaotic mix of rock, punk, and hardcore in the vein of older Converge or Spitfire with some hints of melody. To top it off, it’s easier to pass through your system ten tracks of this band than a nice bite of a grossly jagged, tasteless chunk of metal.
Seth: After seeing these guys perform, listening to this album was a joy. The Lost Art Of Heaping Coal has a nice, classic sound to it. It’s a loud album — technical, with some sing-alongs. It’s a perfect mix of raw hardcore “groove” with the precision of metal. And they’re just a three piece. Excellent.
Sweet. Heading out to purchase this today.
Ugh. One of the worst things I’ve written, and I’ve written some awful things.
Philip is a good man.
i think this is probably the first positive review of a facedown record that i’ve ever read here…
Got it. Awesome, awesome disc. You will be pleased to know Jay, that I was listening to it on the way back from buying it and I kept thinking about delicious platinum pizza.
Mmm…I want me some of that, sprinkled with spikey silver shavings. My lower intestines can feel it now…
I bought this shortly after release and was a bit disappointed. “Dust Over Time Test”, “One Foot Out of Hell” and especially “Lost Art of Heaping Coal” are great, but the rest of the songs just really bore me.
this album is definitely necesarry in todays state of metal/hardcores mediocrity. very few bands are willing to take chances anymore and the result is the same albums being released over and over again, just under different band names. the songs on lost art of heaping coal are extremely well written, the production is sick and personally i feel there is not a track worth skipping. plus it’s a three piece?! and who cares about what label it’s on…a good album is a good album. more please!!!!!
an amazing band to see live and this cd is their greatest and best effort to date. also they’re 3 of the nicest and sincerest dudes i know. i strongly suggest checking out this cd.
I’m really wanting to pick this one. Haven’t gotten around to it yet, though.
Wow Jay DiNitto.. What was so bad about your article? you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. Calm down.
