Billie Joe Armstrong doesn’t like it when paying fans take snap shots or camera phone video of him performing with his other band, Pinhead Gunpowder. Then, when those same fans put that up on YouTube, possibly leading to even more people becoming fans? Well, that’s just crazy talk!
At a recent LA gig Billie Joe had this to say:
“How many people out there have digital cameras and cell phones? Let’s put them away. YouTube can’t own everything. There’s also something called memories.”
Mr. Armstrong’s admonission was welcomed with cheers from the crowd, which sure is cute, but if talk of record labels being evil is fair game, bands trying to dictate when fans can take their photos is just as rotten.
Billie Joe lost all relevancy to me after “Dookie.” Nothing they’ve relaeased since then can touch that album.
You know, for once I agree with Billie Joe Armstrong. I miss the days when you had to attend a concert to see it.
I really don’t think it’s a matter of a band trying to tell the fans if they can take photos; but rather to encourage people to just have fun and enjoy the concert for the moment that it really is…
Plus, I freaking can’t stand those dumb digital camera videos people post on YouTube. It seems like the vast majority of them are 2-9 second clips, awful sound, horrible video quality, where you can’t hear or see anything, and are shot sideways.
I wholeheartedly agree with tAlex.
at least using the excuse that it would be distracting to the performers would be more of a viable reason.
Agreed with tAlex.
No one is making you watch them on YouTube.
I think you’re misconstruing what he said. Billie Joe has never objected to fans taking pictures or videos of performances. What he is urging people to do is to live the experience in the moment and cherish the memories, rather than wanting to turn every real life event into a media experience. At these small shows, if you look at the videos that are on youtube, there was a tide of cell phones and cameras raised in the air. You can see several in just a single shot. He’s saying cherish your life in the now instead of fussing with capturing it on video.
And he didn’t stop anyone from filming or snapping photos, he only asked them to think about it.
i hate this guy! Put his crappy band on youtube NOW!
I’ve never heard them…maybe i should check them out on youtube…
I really enjoy Pinhead Gunpowder.
Seth, I’m not watching them on YouTube. The fact is that the days of driving a couple hours and actually paying to see your favorite band now holds no weight because anyone can wait and see the show the following day online.
Seeing the thing live isn’t the same as watching it on a 425px wide screen with overly-compressed video and audio.
Really Jay?
