Blake’s Top 10 Album List of 2008
Hi, my name is Blake. I’ve been listening to a lot of Morrissey this year. I think it has affected my judgment. Or is it effected? Please forgive me. Oh, and I also started grooming myself more than last year.
Honorable Mentions:
What Made Milwaukee Famous – What Doesn’t Kill Us
The New Frontiers – Mending
Obi Best – Capades
Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours
Benji Hughes – A Love Extreme
The Killers – Day & Age
Mates of State – Re-Arrange Us
Noah And The Whale – Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down
Pale Young Gentlemen – Black Forest (tra la la)
Ryan Adams And The Cardinals – Cardinology
10. Denison Witmer – Carry The Weight
Sometimes I get him mixed up with Damien Jurado. But not this time. I checked.
9. The Magnetic Fields – Distortion
Stephin Merritt should win a lifetime Grammy award or a VH1 rock honors special.
8. Ra Ra Riot – The Rhumb Line
*Insert something witty here*
7. Starflyer 59 – Dial M
This band can do no wrong. They can though, do adequate.
6. Sia – Some People Have Real Problems
When I’m crying in the fetal position, this is the album I listen to.
5. Islands – Arm’s Way
The most promising band since Journey.
4. Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s – Not Animal
This is the album their label, Epic, wanted. I like it better than the one they came up with.
3. Bon Voyage – Lies
Wife of my #7 pick and sister-in-law of my #1 pick. There is no conspiracy. I swear.
2. Santogold – Santogold
She’s the female Kanye but with more than three good songs.
1. The Foxglove Hunt – Stop Heartbeat
Every song on this album could have been a single. They’re the electronic Taylor Swift.

Wow, thanks for saving me the agony of having to ever listen to this then. That sounds awful.

Taylor Swift had like 9 singles off her last album. Next year I’ll spell everything out for you.

That was more snark toward Taylor Swift than anything else. Her name evokes nothing but bile for me, so I was saying that any kind of association with her, or any sort of pop music ‘hit single’ sensibility is immediately off-putting to me.
Sorry if I hurt your widdle feewings. I’ll spell it out better for you next time.

Granted it’s only been a couple months – but Kings of Leon put out a great album this year and somebody’s gotta acknowledge that.
Y’know, I get tired of saving the day all the time, dammit.
MGMT gets an honorable mention for “Album Most Likely To Be Listened To While Going Through ‘That Time’ In Your Life Which You Will Later Regret”
Go buy everything made by The Gutter Twins and you won’t be sorry.

1 – All of those bands I’ve never heard of or heard, therefore they suck.
2 – rojas is the only non-BG writer sanctioned to write a list in the comments.
3 – Do you make omelets? I’d like one. Only egg whites, please. -

1. Sean, I’d just like you to know that you deserve a little arena rock in your life. You seem stressed – g’on, let it out.
2. Jay, you deserve a list written by Emily Post – and exactly one lump of coal. BAH-HUMBUG.
3. There’s another name for an egg-white omelette in the Diner biz: it’s called “Hey, that guy is eating my spit.” EggBeaters™ Jay, EggBeaters™P.S. I thought you hipster website guys knew EVERYTHING. Now who will lead us?
