Thor Christensen of the Dallas Morning News asks: Are cellphones ruining the concert experience? And really, besides “convenience fees” and $4 for a gallon of gas, what isn’t ruining the concert experience these days?
Some big names, of course, chime in on the subject, like Roger Waters and jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. But Carrie Brownstein, guitarist for Sleater-Kinney comments too:
“As a performer, it’s frustrating to look out and see a sea of cellphones instead of faces. There’s definitely a problem where people are so busy documenting the moment that they forget to just live in the moment.”
And when she’s not dancing around selling iPods, Feist talks about cell phones:
“Everyone has this strange archiving addiction now. It’s like they’re trying to pin a butterfly to a corkboard. To me, a gig isn’t supposed to be for posterity,” she says. “It’s supposed to be a bunch of people tossed together in a room, making a mood, and then it’s over. You can’t see the world through a viewfinder.”

The worst I’ve experienced lately of the tech masturbation of always needing to tell people where you are was at a night George Carlin stand up. The crowd was a sea of small blue lights and typing fingers. People laughed and loved being there, but they were never really there since they can’t commit to having their minds focused on one thing anymore. I hope cell phones end the world.
they are there for the wrong reason…very disrespectful to the performing artist..
It’s true, everyone has to document everything.
I don’t have any pictures of me or my favorite locals playing because I’m too busy enjoying the music, whether that invovles headbobbing, sitting in a chair, or moshing and singing along.
I hope someone videotapes some of these local shows, but seriously man, it’s silly to use your CELL PHONE. If people really want to record something, they should just record the audio. Then you just hit go and can be in the moment the rest of the time.
Kids these days…
I’m Twittering while I leave this comment.
I have a wierd obsession with making sure a photo is taken at every show I play….
It is cool to take pictures and record a concert, but to sit there and text the whole fricken show is rude as hell. Just go hang out with your friends and play the bands music in the background since in effect that is all they are is a background sound track when you do that. That way you aren’t looking at people like you need to kill them when the bump into you at a show and you think they have just destroyed you sacred Iphone.
Y’know… for some reason, Tori Amos comes to mind.
careful seth. twitter might suck you in. cellphones do ruin concerts and really pretty much everything else.
