Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into

Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You\'re Getting Yourself IntoHave you ever heard one of those albums where you listen to it and feel like dancing, but then you feel bad for wanting to dance, and then ashamed to admit you like the album at all? That’s how I feel with Does It Offend You, Yeah?’s debut, You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into.

Despite having one of the longest artist/album title combinations I’ve seen in a while, these guys have something catchy going on. My impression when the first track came on was Heyyy these guys sound like Justice. I like Justice. Sweet.

Then the second track, With A Heavy Heart (I Regret To Inform You), came on. Wait, wasn’t I listening to a Justice sound-alike? Not any more. Now it’s some kind of electro-punk thing, somewhere between !!! and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The style change was abrupt, but it’s still catchy so I’ll stick with it.

Skip forward a couple more to Dawn of the Dead. Now I feel like I’m listening to The Killers covering A-Ha.

But it’s not over yet. Skip a few more tracks to Let’s Make Out and we’ve got a blatant Death From Above 1979 copy. I mean, DFA1979 is in their top friends on Myspace, for crap’s sake. A solid track (my favorite on the album, in fact), but my head is starting to spin.

Aside from that, expect a lot of vocoder vocals, an instrumental 60’s organ jam and gratuitous feedback between tracks.

Long story short: DIOYY (I’m tired of writing out the name) have a release full highly relistenable songs; just don’t expect to hear a lot of consistency. If it makes you feel better, pretend it’s a DJ spinning a nice mix of electronic, new wave and electro-punk by five different artists. Does It Offend You, Yeah? is that DJ and a decent one at that.

Well, this review is much better than Pitchfork’s, they gave it a 2.3.

We Are Rockstars is good, but the vocoder vocals get tiresome. It’s probably my DFA1979 love that makes me like Let’s Make Out more.
