Fucked Up Wasn’t Happy With Jade Tree
Be sure to keep up with the ever-evolving Jade-Tree-is-a-bad-label saga.
Fucked Up — some band that is apparently really good, yet their name is stupid so I’ve never heard them — will be releasing The Chemicals of Common Life on Matador in October. If you follow the band, you know that they were formerly on Jade Tree. Their blog explains the reasoning behind the label change.
We did our part by recording a good album and doing a lot of touring, but as soon as the record came out they dropped off the face of the earth — the two main people behind the label got second jobs midway through our contract and were never at the office, and we started having trouble ever getting in touch from them, and also ever figuring out what exactly they were doing for our record.
Apparently they aren’t the only ones in this boat.
We had to pay Jade Tree a lot of money to get out of our contract, and we feel like that money was essentially a reward to them for mismanaging their label and for being neglectful to their responsibilities to their roster. It is a shitty situation for us to be in, but we felt that putting out a second album on Jade Tree would have been a worse option, so we left. We know that most other bands on Jade Tree have had to go through the same nightmare that we did, and that most of the roster from the time we signed has left and gone to other labels, and I know that there are a lot of bands that are angry with the label.
And why were the label heads never around?
There is this great magazine article that has the guy who runs Jade Tree doing this trip over seas to see this football match. I read it and just thought, like, “wow, all this time that I couldn’t get a hold of this guy for eight months that’s where he’s at. All the money we had to give them to get out of our contract — that’s where it’s going.” Life is frustrating sometimes.
Jade Tree? That was one of the last reputable labels I thought could turn this music business debacle around. You’re next, Merge.

Weird – I had also always had the impression that jade tree was credible. I thought this kind of smack only got talked to labels like victory and T&N.

Hopefully all this talk about labels sucking (Jade Tree, Trustkill, Victory) and bands getting dropped will pump some DIY ethic back into music.

[...] Building a Better Emo Kid Everytime I hear “emo” associated to the musical debacle that’s been tagged “emo” for the last half dozen years. I’ve said it before, emo isn’t stupid. There are were some great emo bands out there. Take a look at anything on the Polyvinyl label for instance. By the way, in a very sad turn of events, Jade Tree Records executives have taken second jobs and are not returning phone calls so they can so…. [...]

Someone else left Jade Tree (I can’t remember if it was Lords or Young Widows) because they wanted them to put out their next album digital only. They seem to have promoted Paint It Black’s new one pretty well (and it’s amazing), but the only other news I’ve seen from the label is that Milemarker and Denali play shows again.
The only thing I worry about Fucked Up being with Matador and Young Widows being with Temp. Residence is that these labels don’t have the recognition in hardcore yet, but I’m excited about what the future may hold. -
