Haste The Day asked Jason Barnes to leave the band ‘cuz he’s been reading too many books:
“For a while Jason has been searching and searching for real meaning in his existence. After several months of reading literature and talking with friends, Jason had determined that he felt there was no God and certainly no Jesus.”
Maybe “searching for real meaning in his existence” means “got tired of eating ramen noodles” and “being on the road 239847328 days a year.” No word if Jason will now form a rival metalcore band, go on tour and burn bibles on stage.
that’s the big one with the same silver sg for 5 years now.
I wonder if he watched Zeitgeist and fell for some bad history lessons.
what a great headline
Two points, if I may.
1. Thusly is a word only in the sense that it was created to mock illiterate folk for trying to sound ‘high fellutin.’ I learned this in a writing class, but just to be sure
So yes, I guess it is kind of humorous that HtD lost another singer for their not-so-great band.
2. re: The current picture on their myspace layout. Those are some of the ugliest dudes I’ve ever seen. At least since the Gwen Stacy promos.
Yeah man, people are always trying to give me that zeitgeist crap because i work at a video store. and then i’m like “uhmmm.. i do have a degree in history” and they are like “well, i don’t know…” that movie is bogus.
@Matthew Moore
Jason Barnes was not and never was a singer in Haste The Day.
I’m actually pretty bummed.
I throughly enjoy Haste The Day and am pretty excited to hear their new album.
p.s.
does this mean Seth Dubya is back?
edward, do you have a general degree in history or a specific period?
general, i think. or it could be classics.
i know i’m not ed, but we’ve talked plenty about it.
also, while the historical content of zeitgeist is highly dubious, the economical discussions are much less so. they are still far from spot on, but they aren’t completely wrong.
“No word if Jason will now form a rival metalcore band, go on tour and burn bibles on stage.”
we can only hope Seth
Rather sad they kicked him out. Well, not in a personal way as I am far from being a fan, but for the guy who got booted I feel bad. A very good number of so called bands of christian faith have (or had) a non-believer in the band. Actions like this are normally done by bands wanting to give themselves jesus pride points.
Just because a number of “so called bands of Christian faith” have a non-believer in the band, doesn’t mean it is acceptable. That’s like a Christian band justifying having a druggie in their band because other “Christian bands” have one in their band. Essentially that would be out of a desire to gain “liberal pride points”. I disagree that most Christian bands make a decision of this nature out of a desire to gain “Jesus pride points”. If a band has had a faith in Jesus as their foundation since the beginning, it would be misleading to continue on if not all the members were Christian.
And just so I don’t sound judgmental of liberals (since I myself am more liberal than conservative), I don’t think that every single Christian band who keeps a non-believer in the band is searching for “liberal pride points”. I truly believe that many people view this as extending God’s love and grace to that person. I don’t think either approach is necessarily the perfect way of doing things since we as humans are imperfect and are incapable of understanding God’s viewpoint on every situation.
I think we all need to accept that for the most part people try to do what they feel in their hearts is right. But I’m willing to bet that a ton of comments will follow, calling me naive.
Don’t worry I won’t be calling you or anyone naive. Actually the bands I know of, and have seen over the years that have a non-believer in the band don’t flaunt it around. So no points to gain in that market.
In the bands I have witnessed keep or start playing with non-believers that member just stays rather silent on stage and such about their beliefs for the sake of the band’s overall focus.
When a band makes such a bold statement as this one it comes off as a band trying reaffirm to fans that the band cannot be judged because they are so holy and sold out for christ. This is jesus pride points. Bands do it all the time.
I just feel a sadness over this though. Touring with friends can be a strong bond, and to just boot that person like this, if it was not what that person wanted, is just damn cold.
Very nicely said Chris Berseth.
I can throughly appriciate that.
Just blame the Jews and be done with it.
I’m glad Jay brought that to the fore. It’s always a critical issue, blaming the Jews for chaotic Christian bands. Thanks, dude!
while a majority of christian bands might not make decisions to earn christian scene points, or however you want to term it, i know of a few that have/do. it does happen.
and while i can appreciate both sides of the argument, it’s not like the dude was like “hey, i just want to be a sex-crazed cokehead.” he’s struggling with serious stuff. right now, it’d be good to have some close friends (bandmates usually fill that spot) giving some support in whatever fashion. to just say “you’re asking tough questions and having some serious doubts. sucks to be you, then, because it means you’re out of the band” isn’t necessarily the most tactful thing to do.
granted, the band may not be saying that, per se. but it may well feel/sound like it to him.
Jay shut your mouth
This is not accurate information here on buzzgrinder about this(probably because this story is more humorous). Jason was reading books and trying to find the meaning of his existence, but the band didn’t kick him out because of that. They asked him to leave (after much thought into it) because he was convinced that there is no God and the rest of the band didn’t think they should have someone who doesnt believe like they do cuz its a Christian band.
I think we’re trying to fill in spaces with this post. The only thing I read was that they asked him to leave the band…they’re not disassociating themselves of him or leaving him to the wolves. Saying you outright don’t believe in God is a serious thing when you’re in a “ministry” (whatever level you of ministry you think this band can/should be).
I generally don’t think bands can be ministries, but 5 believing dudes coming together with a definitive spiritual purpose, formal ministry or not, is a serious thing - and it’s serious enough that they think he should not be part of its engine if he’s not on the correct track they are.
It doesn’t sound too cool in terms of human relationships my themselves, and if they were going for popularity points I don’t think they would have made mention of it. Paul mentioned “handing people over” to Satan because of unbelief (1 Tim 1:18-20). I don’t know exactly what this entailed but I’m not going to assume HTD are in screw-our-friends-over mode because they’re letting him go.
jay, it’s actually a double major in history and classics, but i did my senior honors thesis on heterodoxy in the early church. i’m actually going to be going doing my masters in early church history. i’m just saying that zeitgeist’s religious content is downright laughably inaccurate. but, as far as haste the day goes, it’s a bummer that the kicked the guy out and i’m certain it was an agonizingly painful decision, but i suppose props to them for holding to a belief and purpose rather than just using the “christian band” thing to have a built-in audience like a lot of bands do.
This just really goes to prove that books are a tool of the devil not rock n roll. So Glen Benton and Marilyn Manson better get to writing books and stop making music.
THANK YOU thestormmaster, someone who gets the joke! haha
Yeah it was getting way to serious in there.
Bringing this back to the serious topic at hand…
Hitler burned books.
HTD burns books.
Therefore…
