He Is Legend has posted four new demo tracks from its writing and recording sessions for an upcoming, untitled release.
Despite being on Solid State Records, a label widely viewed as “Christian,” one of the tracks, Don’t Touch That Dial, has some lyrics that are bound to raise a few eyebrows:
I’m falling apart
Breaking my fucking heart
Will someone let me know
If they play a song I know?
Ooo swears! This is sure to cause some controversy with any Christian bookstores blindly carrying all Solid State releases. Either that or the band will be releasing it on another label, but that has yet to be proven (though the fact that the label’s news page hasn’t posted anything about the demos could be a hint).
I’m impressed with the band for speaking freely, but maybe that’s my rebellious nature coming into play. Who thinks He Is Legend is going to hell for this one?
i was recently informed that my entire band was going to hell for having our name appear on a flyer that brandished the f bomb…i did not make the flyer, but apparently god has a zero tolerance policy towards this thing. its really serious, remember you can not get into heaven if you have not properly filed out the H-462 form in triplicate. God is a stickler about this stuff people.
I thought He Is Legend was on Atlantic now? Did I imagine that happened?
Never heard of them signed to Atlantic.
That was Project 86 6 years ago…
sure, they are going to hell…and so is the rest of the horrendous music on solid state records.
fucking goddamn band, motherfuckers need to learn when to shut their shitty, filthy beard-ridden mouths
their cred just jumped +78 scene points
Publicity FTW!
Last I checked they never purported to be a Christian band… everyone just ASSUMED they were because they are on SS/T&N…
I just listened to the song and occasionally felt like I was listening to Nickelback.
@Ben Pike: Yep, they’ve never said anything about their faith. There are a few T&N/SS bands like that, and I’m sure they all get tired of the assumption that they are Christians.
I’ve heard them talk about Jesus long ago.
I also read an interview about it long ago.
But, that all changed after I Am Hollywood.
Fucking legends.
Posts touching on substitutionary atonement and afterlife theology always do well here, I’ve noticed.
But seriously folks, I don’t think it’s the bookstores’ fault, although they can put a stop to it or stop trusting their distributors so much (I think Word services them? Not sure…). There’s lots of gatekeeper to go through.
@Jay: Theology isn’t fun unless you can dumb it down to the point that it’s no longer true.
Also, I know more about the Christian bookstore industry than I would ever care to. You’d be surprised what slips through the cracks.
Christian books stores. Kind of a whorish thing.
Their existence is kind of hilarious. Art is art, Christian art is redundant.
Also, this record is going to lose solid state more money than the last he is legend record. The comments on their myspace are so funny. They are all about how everyone is wrong and this cd won’t suck. They also make me never want to be in a band that sounds “epic”.
I would agree. Deicide cover art is pretty Christ-like.
This CD won’t be out on Solid State… Solid State/Tooth&Nail have never released a CD with a cuss word on it. Believe me.
They throw around Christ when they know it’s going to make them a buck, and vice-versa. They’re two-faced, lukewarm money-whores.
I honestly think HeisLegend is amazing.. but.. they honestly try way to hard to drop the whole christian thing.. it’s getting to be a little ridiculous.. I almost think they sat around and were like ..hmm what can we do that will finally draw the line.
…and i’m a christian and i drop the F all the time.. but that doesn’t mean i’m going to hell.. so no
I like HIL cause they always seem to make music that is different (and at times controversial)than what people expect or what is cool in the scene. All their releases since they started as the uriah omen have been different in some way yet I’ve found something to love in all of it. The new demos are way different as I expected they would be, but i’m sure they’ll grow on me.
I really hate alot of what is going on in the hardcore/metal scene nowadays, but this is one band I’ll stick by. Solid State or not, these guys are extremely creative and talented musicians.
they must be christian for having a name like the uriah omen or something like that, right?
When the Agony Scene was one Solidsate Records, one of their songs had the words… “little slut”. They got away with it. Solidstate is just in it for the money. they don’t care about jesus or that stuff. Hell, sign a few christian bands hre and there to keep the little turds happy. He Is Legend was never a christian band. The only member who was christian was their guitar play who had no hair. He was kicked out of the band.

the album WILL be released on solid state…the f bomb will most likely still be firmly in place…when they signed solid state knew they werent christian…tooth and nail/solid state is refered to as mostly christian for a reason…and in fact there have been a few albums released with cursing in them…they just arent listed in the lyrics…listen carefully to a few of your favorite SS albums…you may be surprised…
in addition cussing isnt a sin and no one should ever be looked down upon for doing so…its just not right…
and microwave solid state is not in it just for the money…they are still very christ centered as an organization…but yes they are a buisness and have to function like one…dont be one of those judgmental assholes that think they can only listen to albums where they list jesus first in the thank yous…thats not how life works…thats certainly not how Jesus works…
If HIL is trying to prove the point that they’re not a Christian, band then they oughtta stop being hypocrites and playing Christian music festivals. (they were at Soulfest last year). If they are Christians and they think that swearing is okay, then I’ll respect their opinion, but it sounds more like they’re not and they’re just trying play both sides.
“and in fact there have been a few albums released with cursing in them…they just arent listed in the lyrics…”
Can we keep conspiracy theories out of music, please?
“in addition cussing isnt a sin and no one should ever be looked down upon for doing so…its just not right”
Ephesians 5:4
Philippians 4:8
Ephesians 4:29
Matthew 12:34
Colossians 4:6
Colossians 3:8
Sorry…I couldn’t let that slide…
this is to ben:
i’m just curious which solid state bands supposedly swear in them? I’m not saying its not true.. i’m just wondering since your so certain you must know a couple examples that i might check out…
granted i haven’t been listening to much of ss/t&N as of late because of the overabundance of horrible bands (besides Life In Your Way.. who tend to make me miss the old days of strongarm and how solid state was)… however i’m pretty observant and have never heard swearing on a solid state release. but i could be wrong.
if its released on solid state or not it still really sucks… but who expected anything less.
I’m pretty sure that they were never a christian band.
Don’t they all smoke weed? Anyways, Solid State has a few good bands right now, but I’ve been listening to more Facedown bands lately.
eh…lets not bring weed into this…
ben harper…?
Whether or not He is Legend claims to be Christians is the test as to where they are in the faith vs culture issues. I can’t remember ever hearing them say they were Christians or not. In Christ we are free so we don’t have to act as the world does. If they say they aren’t Christians then it’s no biggie. They are in the world and Solid State is just doing business. I’ve never looked at T&N of SS as Christian labels but a place where Christian bands are readily accepted for the sake of business/marketing rather than faith. The claim by bands who “are Christians but not a Christian band” is an easy cop out.
The Cootees said, “what the hell” in one of their songs.
haha ironic, the page advertisement at the bottom is for tooth and nail
bravesaintsaturn said hell in a song or two but it was digitally edited and that was released on tooth&nail.
He Is Legend used to claim to be a Christian band — especially before they changed their name to He Is Legend. They used to be called The Uriah Omen (which is a blatant Scriptural reference).
I agree the F-word doesn’t make someone a bad person or not a Christian. In my book, G.D. is the only real bad word out of our English “swear words” and that’s only because it takes the Lord’s name in vain.
Also, Brandon Ebel, who created both Tooth and Nail AND SolidState has said before that while they both started as Christian labels, he’d like to see them carry secular bands–which I do not think should be a condemnable offense, even though I know a lot of Christians will be mad about. A Christian plumber fixes toilets of Christians and non-Christians alike. Why is this any different just because we’re dealing with CD’s and microphones?
I was talking to the singer for Still Life Projector at a party (thank you, thank you) and apparently they toured/played shows with HIL at some point, and he said that the guitarist (bald guy) was “this intense Christian. Like scary.”
August Burns Red gave an “Ah Shit!” intro to the last breakdown in “Back Burner”.
And…Underoath says, “Shut your bitch mouth, motherf**ker!” in “Reinventing Your Exit”….er wait…maybe that’s a different band…
I’m thinking that HIL is again trying to get away from playing to a bunch of 14 year old girls every night, and playing real rock n roll, as they did in Suck Out The Poison. I can definitely see the correlation between the new demo’s and some radio butt-rock, as mentioned above (Nickleback), but I can’t really say nay to any of their music, I think it’s all, no, not “epic” (the new scenester buzz word) but…uh, real damn good. And that’s a fact.
I don’t know about curse words but I know that a few Uprok Records artists used ye ole “N” word on a few releases.
WOW… Solid State Christian band swearing? .. wats this all gone to.. If Solid State cares at all about there reputation as a christian label then they shouldn’t let that pass
Oh, and thats so gay, u dont go to hell for swearing in a album even a christian album, but the fact that they are heading that direction to have lyrics like that even as a christian band sure makes it look like they are going to hell, but thats the only reason why, not the action itself
Rob, is that “ah, shit!” as in “ah, shit, we have to play another breakdown”?
I heard that the next mewithoutYou album was going to have a live audio clip of Aaron Weiss having sex with a girl. That’s right, LIVE.
BUT DAMNNNNNN HE IS LEGEND FOR SAYING FUCK. How dare they use that word. I’ve spoken to God and he told me that Fuck is a bad word and that I shouldn’t use it. And all of you are agreeing so I guess he was correct.
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnyway, gotta go finish my Slayer CD. Later guys. God bless.
Can’t breathe…
Too many…strawmen in…thread…
Look at all the cursing on this board.
fuck Jesus
ouch!
Wasn’t this how Chris Staples “announced” Discover America was leaving Tooth & Nail? He put up a new demo with the line:
“But I don’t care how I get there
I’ve got the wind blowing through my fucking hair”
And around the same time, changed “Label” to “unsigned”. At any rate, Suck Out The Poison pretty much did suck, so I can’t really say I care if they cuss.
Haha, good call Jay!
“Don’t they all smoke weed?”
And since when are Christians not allowed to say fuck?
“And since when are Christians not allowed to say fuck?”
*sigh*
Has anyone ever paid attention to some of the lyrics on I Am Hollywood?
“I don’t mind the shape that your head is…
I wanna see you explode”
“The Mourning after I’m stuck in your throat”
And songs like “Suck Out the Poison” and “Electronic Throat” seem very homosexual especially after you watch them play live and Schuyler puts the entire microphone in his mouth during these songs, oh yeah and getting on his knees right in front of the guitarist.
Kind of gay.
If bands on SS get tired of being blindly classified “christian”, maybe the should have thought of that before signing to the label just because they weren’t good enough to sign to a real label.
oh snap!
Ok - here’s my theological spiel on the situation…
No. I don’t believe you will go to hell for saying “fuck.” But as Christians I believe we are supposed to live as examples of Christ. To some people “fuck” is an offensive/derogatory/hateful word, and as Christians I dont believe we should go around spewing offensive language. If a Christians goal is to glorify God by living like Christ - I would think that would mean avoiding offensive/derogatory/hateful speach - whether in private or in public.
Justin, I don’t see what’s wrong with those lyrics or what’s gay about kneeling, it all depends how you interpret it.
Making humping motions on stage, however, does push the limit.
I agree with Ben.
Every time you curse an angel loses it’s wings.
Just kidding.
Seriously, though. Keep this thread going. It’s HILARIOUS in every way.
Ben Pike, i agree with you completely and same with Andy. I believe that HIL went to a christian label in the first place cuz it would be allot easier to appeal to the audience on SS than to compete with the main secular music audiences most likely because they’re music really isn’t good enough and if they tried going to the secular media in music they would of never been heard of! .. Just for the money for them as they really show a terrible example
I too agree with Ben Pike. That was well expressed.
Sometimes I use curse words when I pray.
sometimes i think God don’t give a shit whether HIL swears or not…or anyone else for that matter.
Ben FTW
OMG LOLZ
Jay, I take it you have you have a problem with what Ben said?
Alright then, what’s your opinion?
@J.J.:
haha naw, it’s just Jay being Jay.
Ah, I see. I mistook goofiness for sarcasm.
j.j. is the mall cop policing buzzgrinder for any hints of sarcasm. what would we do without you, man?
. !
What Ben said.
I don’t ever recall T&N/Solid State ever declaring themselves as a “Christian” label.
mmm then maybe they should ditch Christian bookstore distro, stop signing almost exclusively Christian artists, stop having all their bands at major Christian festivals…
oh wait. How will they make their money then?
hmm Andy is right
They’d just be making their money like a “normal” label, no?
But face it. Apart from like, MewithoutYou, what artist is SERIOUSLY known outside of the Christian circles? I mean seriously known. Not just like, 500 people might have heard of SF59.
^Underoath for one.
…also MXPX for sure, and Norma Jean. And I’m pretty sure the same could be said for Emery and Anberlin and others.
I think most bands on Solid State are at least known in hardcore circles. Even freaking Demon Hunter for some reason. Maybe because of Invisible Creature and Asterik Studios before but still. Maybe not 12 Gauge Valentine but LIYW, ABR, Norma Jean, The Chariot, Underoath, and others. I think there are only a few people who don’t like Christian hardcore simply because of the Christian label–but I think a lot of the best hardcore bands happen to be Christian, and people want good hardcore.
Maybe I’m wrong.
Just for the record, I think Josh Scogin could probably diarrhea all over a microphone and record it, and it would sell to a lot of people. I like Norma Jean AND The Chariot, but I just think anything he does will sell, and his life is on Solid State. On a sidenote…
Oh please. Ask the average music listener if they’ve ever heard of Anberlin or Norma Jean and 8 out of 10 people, even if they’re in the “scene” will say, “who?”
Andy, I disagree-and I don’t like those bands. Those bands have been trying for a long time now to break the “Christian scene” image. Plenty of people know about them- mostly high school kids though.
mewithoutYou and As Cities Burn are the only bands worth my time on the T&N/SS roster.
and maybe Children 18:3. Not.
@ Andy.
What is an average music listener? Someone who listens to Daughtry, Natasha Bedingfield, Souljaboy Slim, and Fall Out Boy?
The truth of the matter is that bands like Underoath, Norma Jean, AnBerlin, and yes, even Starflyer 59 are WELL KNOWN outside of Christian circles.
Nearly all of T&N and Solid State’s heavy hitters have been on some form of major tour, i.e. Warped, Sounds of the Underground, Taste of Chaos, Ozzfest, Radio Rebellion, etc. And the last time I checked these aren’t exactly known as “Christian” tours. So even if you were to ask 10 people in the so-called “scene” if they’ve ever heard of those bands I’m sure that you would receive a resounding “Uh… yeah dude.”
Underoath, Norma Jean, AnBerlin, MxPx, Hawk Nelson, and other T&N/SS bands have moved hundreds of thousands of units, sometimes by one band… you can’t tell me that every single person who bought a T&N/SS CD was a “Christian.”
I didn’t say every. Just 8 out of 10!
To Gerorge
Its true that Underoath and others are well known out of the christian circle but only for their type of music. For instance Underoath and Norma Jean are well known for anyone at all who listens to that type of hardcore music, but thats about all they are known for outside christian music scene
The argument that “Underoath and Norma Jean are well known for anyone at all who listens to that type of hardcore music, but thats about all they are known for outside Christian music scene” can be applied to any genre… not just Christian music. For example, if you walk up to someone on the street and ask them if they’ve heard of Converge or Dillinger Escape Plan or Shai Hulud or any other “secular” metal band, the chances are that they will have no clue what you’re talking about. This is a silly argument.
Everybody regardless of scene or not scene knew who Underoath was when I was in High School. Everybody loved They’re Only Chasing Safety at my school.
just thought I’d add that to the convo
I enjoy sandwiches
@Jordan
It didnt always used to be that way…
I was in HS when “Cries of the Past” came out and I was one of about a dozen in my COUNTY who knew who Solid State records even WAS…. (granted that album was releasd on Takehold…)but naturally it’s grown since then.
If you had told me 8 years ago that my favorite metal/hardcore band (at the time) would release an album that would go on to be a certified Gold album - I would have said you were insane.
Yes Jerff your actually right

If its a secular band it could be less known as a christian one. It doesn’t necessarily make a difference if its christian or not

@Ben
Of course they are more popular now that they are on TN/SS Have you seen the insane amount of advertising dollars that are spent on them. Every networking site, music blog, and hipster hangout has at least one Underoath AD on their page.
Wait…Arn’t Chevelle a Christian band, and don’t they say fuck? I don’t get why it’s a big deal.
yah! i know it jordan, on this very site i only see adds from TN
i thought it was a christian site because of that at first hah
@ Katie,
Chevelle are not a christian band although they “mistakenly” signed to a “christian label” to release their first album. They are said to be “recovering catholics”.
I love Children 18:3. I’m not kidding. One of the best bands to sign to T&N in a good long while.
And my 2 cents about the whole “not known outside of Christian circles” is just really off base. What do you mean by average? Do you mean serious music fans or the person who buys Top 40 radio? If you mean the average joe or jane who likes “that song they heard on the radio” then they are not going to be aware of anything that is released on independent labels of any kind because it’s simply not big enough to be on their radar. These are the people who did not hear about Nirvana or Green Day until they had hits. Those bands existed in the underground before they were household names, no? But when you have guys from Demon Hunter, Norma Jean, As I Lay Dying and Underoath on the cover of Revolver magazine…you have to conceed that they have broken out of the subculture. Just the facts.
Um…oops…I mean…what Sean said. And what Jerff (maybe that was a typo?) said.
P.S. I hope Buzzgrinder isn’t a “Christian” website. It might try to witness to me, or get me to vote for a Republican!
First catholics aren’t Christians suggestion in a quite a while. Nice work Eric.
@ Eric
Oh!!! Okay!!! I get it now.
I’m with Bill on Children 18:3. After a few listens of their album I discovered that they are really freaking good.
Additionally, this thread has quickly lost its controversial bent. Too many people are coming to a consensus. We can’t have that.
To wit:
JESUS WAS A SHORT-TENTACLED BLACK ACROBATIC DWARF FROM ALPHA-CENTAURI.
Go!
@ Blenderhead… I mean Bill
Christian!?! Republican!?!
What do you think this is? CCM Magazine?
Jay - That statement in entirely unbiblical! The New Testament makes it clear that Jesus was a man, born on earth. Furthermore, centaurs are pagan! You can’t insert concepts from other religions into your interpretation of scripture. You keep this up and next you’ll be telling me that it’s possible to lose your salvation after you’re saved.
well, jesus was a republican after all…i mean look…
http://webpages.charter.net/micah/repjesus18.gif
Oh Lord more strawmen.
My thing with the Nail is, any band that signs w/ them KNOWS how heavily they’re involved w/ the Chrsitian ghetto. You can’t sign w/ a label like that and then get pissed when a bunch of youth group kids who see your CD in at Family Bookstores assume you’re a “Christian band”. Say what you will about their breakthrough success, I’m sure it’s legitimate. The fact is though, they still have their hands in the back pockets of the Chrsitian industry.
I bet Jesus liked sandwiches.
“You keep this up and next you’ll be telling me that it’s possible to lose your salvation after you’re saved.”
It’s possible to lose your salvation after you’re saved.
So are HIL Christians or not?!!!
“you’ll be telling me that it’s possible to lose your salvation after you’re saved.”
That… that can’t be true, can it?
::throws away golden oxen idol and cancels orgy::
Pelagian Heresy! I declare you Anathema!
Boobs.
where?
Awesome, another pointless TULIP argument has been born onto the interwebz. Don’t slip on the afterbirth.
TULIPs look nothing like boobs.
Let me swing this holy ghost train back on track here…
Did anyone NOT expect this He is Legend?
That’s a negatory.
Blargh.
Did anyone NOT expect this FROM He is Legend?
I’m siding with Bill Power on this one… I mean… the guy at one point was second or third man down at T&N… right?
Looks like the Evangelicals don’t have anything better to do… as usual…
lol nice one Jay DiNitto.. But no thats not possible
Dude the TULIP thing was all a joke right? I mean, I wasn’t really proclaiming heresy and anathema…right?
I don’t know, were you? Are you asking me? lol wut?
I thought a discussion of the finer points of theology would catch on, which is why I mentioned it. But alas… Does this mean I should be stoned for being a false prophet?
I heard He Is Legend are Mormons.
Dude…don’t even get me started on Mormons.
Linkin Park rules!!
i saw them live in Chicago!!
We now have a non sequitur, thus completing the thread.
*soothing harp music plays in background*
You gotta love Timbre… I mean what?
what the crap is Timbre?
Jay you mean there are deeper theological issues than Christians and swearing!?
“It’s hard enough to cut down a tree with an ax. It’s impossible to cut it down with a butter knife!”-Martin Luther on why he used “strong” language.
This is the same band that use to post blogs asking people to bring them Jack Daniels on the road. Only people that thought they were Christian were the mindless solid state followers that don’t realize Christian record labels are all about the almighty dollar.
thestormmaster T&N and SS have a satisfactory business and do well with being known(not that there is anything wrong with that)and get good money, but most Christian record companies are not as known as T&N at all and don’t get much money, so don’t say that.. In fact i couldn’t even recall any other Christian record companies..
I also think that the jazz on them being big money whores doesn’t mater,(companies are about money) its just a company that advertises the band and the band is what matters.
Don’t businesses run on “almighty dollars”? I’m pretty sure they do.
And I’m also pretty sure records don’t make themselves, and producers don’t work for peanuts and vans don’t run on the good will of men.
Such a sad tired argument. “They are just about making money.”
Duh.
Bill It is an old tired arguement, but when you have bands like The Agony Scene and He is legend that pretty much should have never been in the christian market. which i believe i have heard the agaony scene comment about that(but i may be wrong) It kinda makes you wonder about that arguement. At the same time I am glad that T&N/solid state have the Money to put into bands because everyone has heard labels that can’t and the albums pay for it. I just have a problem with marketing in the christian market that really shouldn’t be. Now i know he is legend last album wasn’t marketed to christians but that just means then their first one shouldn’t have either. Oyeah much love to the almighty Blenderhead
thestormmaster is too smart for yall
i heard that bill power is a fascist mormon that eats babies. not sure if it’s true. that’s just what i’ve heard.
give ‘em hell, bill.
This thread is still alive? I mean, seriously?
Well, you just bumped it after almost 5 days of no replies…
It’s alive again now.
YAAYYYY!!!!
