Interview: JT Woodruff of Hawthorne Heights

Tonight FN MTV will premiere the new Hawthorne Heights video Rescue Me (check your local listings for showtime). I was able to converse with JT Woodruff, the bands singer/guitarist and total hottie.

This video, Rescue Me — come on, is it based on the Denis Leary TV show on FX? Did the thought cross your mind during the pre-production?
Ha ha no. I’m a huge Denis Leary fan but I never put two and two together. The video doesn’t look anything like the TV show though.

Bands are quick to talk smack about record labels these days — it’s fashionable like slipping on Vans… but, do you think the internet helps bands and records labels “get along?” Not digging for dirt here — just wondering if the internet, and how easily bands can talk to all their fans through a MySpace bulletin — that’s a good thing, right?
I definitely think it helps out to network with the fans and show that you’re real people and show that you have different interests or even the same interests. I think it’s awesome to connect with as many people as you can, whether through music or just friendship.

But I don’t like how it’s easy for any band to put their songs on in the first week. If we put our first song that we ever wrote in a week online, it would have been the worst song ever. I don’t think that that’s a good idea, I think bands should develop more. I think that’s a reason some bands will have one song and then you don’t see them anymore.

I don’t know how old you are (wikipedia lets me down!), but what’s your earliest memories of MTV from back in the day?
It was definitely Poison. I’m a huge fan of the band Poison, and it was a video for the song Nothing but a Good Time. That was the first time I ever saw MTV. It turned me on to watching Headbangers Ball. I’d love to say that my first video was Headbangers Ball or Metallica, but it wasn’t. It was Poison, and I loved the fact that they were all dressed up with huge hair.

FN MTV is hosted by Pete Wentz — do you think you would be a better host? Or should you have your own late night talk show? Is there a show you’d love to host, like Dateline or Sportscenter?
I think I’d be good if I had a little time to prepare. I’m not actively seeking anything like that, but I think Pete does a good job because he’s an interesting guy and he loves music.

I think I could do something like that, on a music show, or Sportscenter would be really cool. I think that as the lead singer of the band, I do a lot of the talking during shows and whenever we go anywhere for interviews or whatever, so I have at least a little experience with that. I think that would be pretty cool and pretty fun.

Finally, we were all pretty shocked to hear of the death of Casey Calvert. Is there anything you learned through the situation that you could pass along to someone reading this that might have lost someone close to them?
I definitely think that what we all learned through that situation is that life is really precious and it can be taken away from you without any reason, without any knowledge. Something might suddenly happen and you can lose somebody. There’s not a right or wrong way to deal with it, and I think that we’re still feeling it each day and each time that we’re together helps us through it.

Talking about it definitely helped us. When you have someone you care about, you need to cherish and respect your time with them and avoid fighting because you never know what the last thing you may say to someone. You can’t take your relationships with family and friends for granted.

Check your local listings for FN MTV to catch the new video, Rescue Me, from Hawthorne Heights. The band’s new album, Fragile Future, comes out Aug. 5 on Victory Records.

JT would do a much better job hosting FNMTV, that show sucks because of Pete. Everyone hates Pete. Everyone.
