The New Frontiers are one of the 43 bands on The Militia Group’s roster. They recently released their debut full length entitled Mending and it’s been getting rave reviews. We got a chance to talk with bassist Ryan Henry about meaningless things. Their new record is good though.
Does your band’s name have anything to do with John F. Kennedy or the new Justice League movie?
Nah. Justice League movie?! I’m going straight to IMDB after this interview.
Where do you find the inspiration for your Youtube video journals?
Mitch Hedburg has this bit about writing a joke in his head, and then convincing himself it’s not funny just because he’s too lazy to go across the room for a pen to write it down. Most of the time that’s how we feel about our video camera. We used to be way more ambitious too. Special effects, funny transitions, stuff like that. Now we’re doing good if we even catch 30 minutes of film on a given tour. So basically, we need a documentarian. Anyone interested? We can pay you in high fives and drink tickets.
I’ve only seen glowing reviews for your new record Mending. If there is a bad review, what did the worst one say?
There have been a couple. Some guy from a school paper in Connecticut didn’t like it. I can’t remember what he said, but I know my Dad found it online and gave him his two cents. So be careful what you say about us. You might get a nasty letter from one of our parents.
What’s the worst part about touring for you?
Missing my girlfriend, my bed, my family and any sense of normalcy. That and not having the time to stop at really cool places, like Gram Parson’s grave or Dinosaur World.
What bands do you think you sound like?
Most people call us either alt-country or the brit-rock. We’re probably neither and both.
What’s The Militia Group really like to work with?
They’re nice.
What are The New Frontiers up to right now and upcoming?
Working. Writing. More touring.
C’mon Blake, this is Buzzgrinder, you’re supposed to dig up that he used to play in Within.
