Interview: The Windupdeads

You’ve probably never heard of them before, but The Windupdeads are a Swedish rock act soon to release their self-titled debut Oct. 7. We got a chance to talk with drummer Marcus von Boisman about the band, their recent Paste Magazine sampler selection, and how the show Gossip Girl isn’t very good.
Let me first get the generic questions out of the way. How did you come up with your name?
We wanted a cool sounding name, and Rickard came up with the windupdeads. We thought the name should be something that your mom wouldn’t appreciate. And so far it seems like that’s the case.
What were some of your influences, musical or otherwise, for starting the band?
I think we all have found, after playing in different bands through the years, the beauty of making classic songs, not trying too hard to be different or complicate things. Good examples of this is U2 and Coldplay, to name a few.
One of your songs was featured on the show Gossip Girl. What was it like hearing yourself on TV for the first time?
It was very cool. When we saw the trailer, our song was featured in the first one. They had used it in a good way.
Have you seen the show? It’s not very good.
The show pretty much sucks, but I don’t think the writers had us in mind when they wrote that show.
You’re from Sweden. Is it true that all the women there look like Victoria Silvstedt and nobody fights?
We try to fight as little as possible. And yes, lot’s of women here are a bit Silvstedtish. It’s hard to keep focus on a hot summer day.
I heard about you through the Paste Magazine sampler. How did you get in contact with each other?
I think our record label pushed to get our song The End on that sampler, and they liked the song. Thanks for that, Paste!
What’s been the biggest challenge about breaking into the states so far?
The biggest challenge is probably to get the word out, letting people know you exist at all. It’s not like you don’t have any good bands there already. I think we’re on the right path now and it’ll be a lot of fun when we come over to play some shows.
Your debut album comes out Oct. 7. It’s a very good record. Will you remember Buzzgrinder when you’re famous?
Thank you! You don’t forget Buzzgrinder!
After you release the record, what’s next for the band?
First a US tour in September and, as we release the record in Sweden on the same date, we’ll do some shows in Sweden in October and hopefully we’ll get back to the states for a longer tour in November or something like that.
Since you’re still fairly unknown in America, what’s the most important thing you want people to know about The Windupdeads?
We’re just four good friends trying to make good music come alive. Most of all, we like to play them live, so I hope we’ll see you somewhere in the states soon.
