Interview: Trever Keith Of Face To Face

Most people know Trever Keith as the frontman of the acclaimed band Face To Face. What they don’t know is that his side projects have been featured on a number of Hollywood soundtracks, he runs a record label on the side, and he once took My Chemical Romance out on tour. Mr. Keith took the time to talk to us about the upcoming Face To Face reunion tour, his new solo project and how the punk rock community is just an illusion.

Tell us about your new solo album, Melancholic Anonymous. Will Face to Face fans like it, or how does it differ from your past projects?
I think Face To Face fans will definitely like it, especially fans of our Ignorance is Bliss record. It has many of the same songwriting sensibilities of Face To Face, it’s just not a punk record.

Where can people go to buy or hear your music?
Right now the only place you can go to hear the full album and purchase the full download for $5 is treverkeith.com.

You’ve decided to reunite Face to Face for some live shows. What made for that decision and will we ever hear any new material from the band?
We kept getting all these great offers to go out and play shows and we continued to turn them down for a few years. Finally we decided, “Why not?” We love the music and we’re still practically like family. Why not continue to do something that is so fun?

Take me back up to the time before Ignorance is Bliss came out. You’re a successful punk band touring with the likes of No Doubt, The Offspring and NOFX. You then decide to stray from your sound a bit with a new record. What made for that decision and was there any initial backlash to the new Face to Face?
We weren’t content to keep the status quo. We wanted to take our music to a new level with production, songwriting, etc. It was pretty ambitious. At first the fans did not react well, but now that the record is eight years old people tend to say it was our best ever.

Can you talk about your dealings with the label Beyond Music?
I can but there’s not much to tell. They were another in a long list of labels that failed to capitalize on the success we were generating for ourselves with touring.

You gave My Chemical Romance an opening slot on your farewell tour. They’re everywhere now, what were those kids like back then?
They were super cool guys on the tour.

What is the status of your other bands Legion of Doom and Viva Death?
The Legion of Doom is still active. We recently had a couple of remixes in the Resident Evil: Extinction Soundtrack. Viva Death is more of Scott’s thing. The second record was released on his own independent label, Functional Equivalent Recordings, last year. I’m focusing on my solo record Melancholics Anonymous for now. I will be out on the road performing music from Melancholics Anonymous in April and May in the US.

Can you tell us about your label, Antagonist Records?
I released a few Hip Hop records and some of our Legion of Doom material on Antagonist. I’m also releasing DVDs. We put out a Face to Face documentary last year and I just released a small budget indie film on DVD called Eyes Front (for which The Legion of Doom wrote all of the music).

What’s the symbolism behind the title of the Face to Face documentary Punk Rock Eats Its Own?
That the illusion of “community” in Punk Rock is just that, an illusion.

You’re a legend to many a fledgling and established punk band out today. What’s the best advice you could give?
Go to college.
