Josh James was recently on Warped Tour with his band, Evergreen Terrace, and thought it sucked that kids were trying to steal merch from the bands:
“One of the first incidents on the tour was with another hardcore band. Their merch girl told me two guys tried to steal a CD from her table. When she confronted them their reply was, “What? We are stealing from the band, not you.”
You know who I remember stealing stuff in all my years of going to shows? The jocks. But they keep coming to mosh and push around 90 lbs. white kids, so I guess it’s going to keep happening.
Says Josh:
“I’ve always felt that hardcore/punk rock was a world of it’s own — a place to step away from society — and that anyone participating in this unique way of life makes up a part of that community. People like this and problems like these are the kind of things that build up walls and divide communities.”
A world of it’s own? A place to “step away from society?” You mean how Warped Tour gets away with charging $5 for a bottle of water?
Kids stealing from bands sucks, of course. Charging $5 for something that kids need to survive on a hot day sucks just as bad. Meanwhile, bands (like Evergreen Terrace) are eating catered meals backstage served by volunteer help. I’m just saying.

Actually- some friends of mine in the band Confide-yea, I just name dropped- were on a scheduled time to help serve the food. Maybe I got something mixed up- but I’m pretty sure that’s what I heard them say…
As far as $5 water and other out of this world prices- My friend and I didn’t eat from 10:30 am to 10:00 pm the day of Warped… Eff an $8 piece of pizza that would only sustain a 4 yr old. Stick it to the man.
I remember some kid bought Life In Your Way and Means merch (at the same show) with counterfeit money. They found out who it was and they called the cops a bunch of times that night, but they didn’t do nothin’. Yay law enforcement.
Well Jay, in defense of the Police, you did admit that he used a blue $5 with Uncle Moneybags on the front…
$5 water. That is the main thing that bothers the heck out of me about Warped Tour.
Lets just pretend those hooligans stole bottled water and put this issue to rest. It’s really not that difficult to imagine people stealing stuff. In fact, I really think people steal things, sell them for twice the price, and donate the extra cash to the charity of their choice. It’s a “circle of life” thing.
There are always drinking fountains.
Any kid paying a dollar for water is an idiot. The only shame here is that they are actually making a significant profit while selling water for $5 a bottle. There’s a sucker born every minute.
