Lessons In Music Blogging

im_blogging_this.jpgJames Montgomery goofed. He covered that whole ‘Deerhunter leaked entire collection of music ever made to the internets’ thing. Then he said he covered it like an average blogger. The problem? He writes for MTV News:

“I basically recapped the entire event in a condescending tone, put words in Cox’s mouth (the whole “Blames You” headline), and did not bother attempting to contact him for further comment or clarification. I was irresponsible and one-sided. In other words, I covered the whole thing the way your average blogger would.”

Average blogger? You mean copying most of this Chartattack interview with Between the Buried And Me and pasting it on Blabbermouth is something an average blogger would do? Or no? I’m confused.

So is he saying the average blogger puts words in people’s mouth? Pitchfork’s cover of the 7 stages of Bradly’s bad week was very good, surprisingly. Well not that surprising now that I think about how they have computer boners for him.

Referencing your source isn’t only courtesy but it makes a post on your stupid blog legitimate.

But bigger sites like Blabbermouth and Lambgoat can afford to act like internet a**holes and not give credit.

I remember I used to get an entertainment e-newsletter way back in ‘96 or ‘97 called Zentertainment. It had most of the industry news about which actor signed to what movie, how much a blockbuster has grossed, what project just got fast tracked to production, etc. I asked my friend if he subscribed to it and he said, “Nah, I can get all that information by going to a few different sites.”

That’s the appeal of blogging. You get a multitude of information in one place. Buzzgrinder is an EXCELLENT example because I never go to absolutepunk or lambgoat or any other site really. But I assure you that I’ve read at least half of their headlines.

The flipside of that is giving credit where credit is due. Again, Buzzgrinder is an excellent example.
