Lords Loves CDs, Not Files

lords_files.jpg

Lords vocalist/guitarist Chris Owens talks about their latest album on Black Market Activities. It was intended for release on Jade Tree, but said label had money woes.

“(Jade Tree) told us that they didn’t have enough money to release the record; they asked if we were interested in doing a digital–only release but that didn’t really appeal to us. We want to put out a record, not a file.”

Damn straight! More CDs! More shrink wrap! More shipping labels! Mailers! Postage!

I know you’re probably all gonna slam me for this, but I agree with the guy. There’s something about waiting for a cd to come out, driving to get it, opening it up, enjoying the artwork, having the linear notes, and a physical copy that can be played in your cd player. I don’t know, I just can’t do this whole digital thing. Call me old-fashioned.

When you use amazon or iTunes you still have to wait. Watching the spinning progress arrow is intoxicating.

The artwork thing needs to catch up though. OH HEY LOOX I KAN SEE THE ALBUM COVER AND ITS REFLEXION

    Reflection? I don’t get it.

    @Jay:

A lot of artists are putting their album artwork as an attached PDF. I know when I bought the new A Fine Frenzy (shut up, it was for my g/f) from iTunes it came with a PDF with all the artwork liner notes, etc.

And with the recent Nine Inch Nails digital release came downloadable artwork and liner notes (identical to what was on the CD – I know because I downloaded it first – then paid for the 2CD set)

So it exists… it’s just not “industry standard” yet.

I only went digital because of the mass amount of CDs I have accumulated since junior high. I don’t have room for them anymore. Plus, I was getting to the point where I never even looked at the liner notes or anything anymore. There’s a lot of sacrifices you have to make to listen to a ton of music, caring about album artwork and knowing all the lyrics to an album are two of them.

If your record label “can’t afford” to put out an actual record, it’s time to find a new label.

So they want to put out a disc with files on it instead? A disc that most people will ultimately put into their computer, extract the files from, and use the files in the same way they would if they would have downloaded them, just with more waste?

    Sounds logical.

Jade Tree has been opting for digitally only releases for about a year now. Sounds like bad days for the tree.

there is something to be said for when you’re a band and you spend time and money recording a CD and making artwork to hold something in your hand at the end of the project. the point is well taken that it ends up on most people’s computers, but there is a tangibility that’s missed, especially for those that make the album.

Tangibility, that’s the word I was looking for. Thanks, buddy.

i’m with buddy here. the sensual nature of holding and reading liner notes and artwork is irreplaceable. it helps bridge the gap between material and immaterial regarding the latent dualism involved in the digital revolution.

but my feeling is that bands should no longer put out CDs. they should only put out vinyl with a companion digital download. but only because it seems that people are more willing to buy physical copies of stuff on vinyl (which aren’t easily converted into a digital format).

I bought the new Unwed Sailor on vinyl because it also had the ditigal download. Kudos to BTV.
