Morning Buzz: Record Stores, Mogwai, VMA, Phantom Planet

:: Record shops and “mom & pop” music stores are getting hit by legal and illegal music downloads. Go buy a record for a small time shop today! [Thanks, Largehearted Boy]

:: MTV Video Music awards are taking place as I’m writing this. Stereogum is usually a good spot to get your celeb-trash VMA fill.

:: If you get the chance to catch the Mogwai or Fuck Buttons on tour pick up the split EP. Each band does the other a favor and covers the other.

:: Phantom Planet has been featured on Daytrotter.

:: Tooth & Nail has a new website. I’m not a fan.

    Hey, at least you don’t have to click “skip” five times just to get to the T&N homepage now.

    Not to mention the fact that mom & pop shops have to compete with big box chains like Best Buy & Wal-Mart who are offering CDs to the public for what indie shops purchase them from distros for.

    My home town is down to 1 indie record shop, we use to have about 6.

    I like the new T&N site…there’s a learning curve whenever there’s a new UI on a certain site. But after a certain amount of time, users get used to it.
