The Era Of Music Blog Monopolies

Remember the good ole days when you used to sit on your father’s lap watching Gilligan’s Island, fearing that you would contract small pox while all the music blogs were owned and operated by separate entities? Well the times are changing and soon you may not even have to churn your own butter!

Earlier this year, Buzznet announced that they acquired some of the biggest names in the game — Idolator, Stereogum and AbsolutePunk — with financial help from Universal Music Group.

Then came word that two of my personal favorites, largehearted boy and Catbirdseat, were joining forces with Chromewaves, Fluxblog and Said the Gramophone for something called MBV. Think Fark, but too wordy.

And now the other giant, Pitchfork, is teaming up with The Fader for “integrated advertising and sponsorship opportunities across all properties and platforms, including print, online, festivals, events, and unique content exchanges.” Whatever that means.

Guys, I think our invites got lost in the mail.

I am gonna have to agree with you that about the lack of invites to these clubs.

Seriously, networking is the way to go, but why wouldn’t they just regularly link smaller blogs as well and not merely share their similar audiences among the group?

The big winner will be whomever starts getting Pretty Much Amazing to link them regularly. Luis has a traffic monster on his hands there.
