Before I start, I have a confession to make. While I enjoy My Morning Jacket, they aren’t one of my favorite bands. In fact, they aren’t my favorite band from Louisville, Ky. They aren’t even my second favorite band from Louisville. Wax Fang and VHS or Beta (in that order) are ahead of Jim James and company. In fact, my favorite MMJ-related moment was on Derby Eve this year when James joined Wax Fang on stage to sing My Old Kentucky Home. In pirate garb, no less. You had to see it to believe it.
With that out of the way, I’ll get to the band’s new record. It’s not as jangly as previous efforts. That was the first thing to hit me. The next thing that hit me was Highly Suspicious, which sounds like a lost Prince song which may have appeared on Tim Burton’s Batman soundtrack. And there are plenty other genre-bending jams on Evil Urges, though none quite so peculiar. However, the musical schizophrenia pays off, because most of the tracks are solid, if not incredible. Don’t worry though, there’s still plenty of twang. So much so on one track that I could’ve sworn I’d swapped out CDs and was listening to Charley Pride or Aaron Neville. It’s an album that has to be heard to be believed.
I was’nt much of a fan tell i saw MMJ’s live dvd Okonokos. watch it
yeah, it’s good. i really enjoyed it, and i don’t usually like those kinds of dvds
My review of this album would be just a few words: Not that good. Bad falsetto.
the last two words of your review are certainly correct. the first three, i’m not so sure.
I haven’t listened to anything off of “Evil Urges” because I’m trying to keep the anticipation up. MMJ is one of my favorite bands of all time so I’m sure it’ll be well worth the wait.
