Rainn Wilson’s ‘The Rocker’ Has its Moments

Since the Buzzgrinder staff is so lazy, we’ve turned over operations to our friend Jacob Merritt, drummer of Pomegranates, for the day.

I recently attended an advanced screening of The Rocker. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a film about finding success as a rock band in the face of insurmountable odds that seemed to be marketed to both teens and… whoever finds Rainn Wilson to be a funny man. I am one of the latter.

It was OK. Some pretty funny jokes, some clever dialogue and Rainn Wilson getting hurt in amusing ways. No one is going to be burying this film in Oscars, but I have a hunch that isn’t what the producers and director were going for.

I think what really captivated me about the film was the amount of crass language, obscene gestures and Rainn Wilson butt crack you can get away with and still have a PG-13 rating.

Slowly but surely, I’m getting the hang of looking at Rainn Wilson and not automatically seeing him as Dwight. It’s taking a while.

It helped when I was watching season 3 of Six Feet Under a couple weeks ago. He plays an apprentice at the funeral home for a few episodes. Very amusing. :)
