RIP Dock Ellis, Who Pitched a No-No While on Acid

On Dec. 19, former major league pitcher Dock Ellis passed away at the age of 63. While I knew who he was for a few reasons (i.e. being a baseball nerd with no life), most people would only know him for one thing: Pitching a no-hitter while allegedly high on LSD.

Why would you care? You probably wouldn’t. Even though he was a great pitcher, loose cannon and eventually an anti-drug activist. But it gives me an excuse to post this song from Chuck Brodsky, affectionately known by some as the baseball balladeer. It’s a superbly written account of how Ellis said it all went down on that fateful day in San Diego.

Dave Wells through his no hitter hung over. And I can’t imagine the volume of alcohol that rotund SOB would have to consume to get that drunk.
