John Spalding Loses Battle with Cancer

If you haven’t heard yet, John Spalding of Ninety Pound Wuss and Raft of Dead Monkeys died this past Sunday after a long battle with lung cancer. From former bandmate Jeff Suffering:
He was 33 years old, and was married to Jody Spalding. He had no children, but loved kids and always wanted to be a Dad. He was one of my best friends and I will miss him terribly. He spent the last few years working on an album that he always wanted to make. You can listen to it at http://www.myspace.com/lovelandrock. Lots of his friends from Seattle played on it including Matt Johnson who was in Ninety Pound Wuss, Raft of Dead Monkeys, and S&THT as well. If any body would like to help out with a very large amount of medical expenses that accrued over the last few years there is a benevolent fund set up in his name at Bank of America. It is “John D Spalding Medical Fund” you can go in to any BofA and make a deposit. All funds will go to the family to help pay expenses. Please keep Johns family in prayer.
We’ll keep John’s family in our prayers. I know that death is hard, but I think it’s especially difficult when any talented person dies before being able to really grace us with their work.

“Who’s gonna break? Not me!
Who’s gonna break? Not me!
Who’s gonna break? Not me!
Who’s gonna break? Not me!
Who’s gonna break the system?
We’re gonna fight till we die!”I still listen to that album.

I’m not sure John was on that album, Jay. I didn’t think he came on board until “Where Meager Die of Self Interest”, a personal favorite album of mine.

Used to dig 90lb a great deal during high school. Still a fan of Suffering and the Hideous Thieves. Did he have any part in that endeavor?

Wow, the other day I was just thinking that Ninety Pound Wuss was possibly one of the most over looked bands in Tooth & Nail’s history along with Roadside Monument and Blenderhead. He will be missed.

im not too sure that he was a smoker, but maybe. i do know that the cancer started in his colon and eventually spread to his lungs. either way, yes, you should quit smoking. i have been smoke free for alomost two years now, and its wonderful. one thing that helped me quit was imagining all of the non-smoking corporate tobacco CEO’s that were going on expensive vacations, putting their kids through college, and retiring on money made from people in hospital beds slowly dying in immense pain from lung cancer. kinda makes me sick.

yeah that wouldn’t make me quit (not that I smoke cigs anyway…I’m a piper).

I don’t know matt…I’d say the CEOs making a living is the only good thing that comes out of this.

well, it was just my own personal viewpoint obviously, and i can definitely get down with smoking a pipe from time to time, but nothing of any lasting good comes from making money off tobacco sales. its a death business.

I don’t blame “CEOs” – or the thousands of peons that put food on their table from tobacco sales – because if there was no demand for cigarettes they would just have to find a more productive career. I generally blame the dude that’s dumb enough to start smoking cigarettes knowing full well what it does…but that’s anathema especially when they’re dying/did die of cancer.

i blame them all…
i think the folks that make smokes are just as silly as the folks that choose to buy them. there is no other legalized business that is so one pointed and blatantly harmful, except maybe the cheetos corporation (amongst other junkfood peddlers). its not a smart way to conduct your livelihood, and it brings consequences to the maker as well as the buyer.
but specifically about the “CEO’s”. i dont know, it just bothers me to think of some kids rich cigarette industry dad buying them their first car, or paying their college tuition. it just irritates me, but im okay with throwing that irritation into the “personal problem” category. we all got our little annoyances.
