Ticket Prices Are Killing Concerts

If cell phones killing the concert business isn’t enough for you, then what about ticket prices killing them? Rolling Stone has an article where, due to the United States’ lackluster economy, the rise in ticket prices are quietly hurting the major artist concert industry.
(Eric) Clapton’s June 2nd date at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, is on sale for $125 to $195, compared to $85 to $150 at the same venue in 2006; the Eagles’ three late-May dates at Madison Square Garden are $50 to $190, compared to $25 to $180 when they played there in 2005.
Some artists though are standing their ground in these rough times.
Of course, many artists resist the economic pressure to increase prices — Tom Petty and (Bruce) Springsteen generally keep their tickets below $100, Dave Matthews Band tops out at $75, Pearl Jam is between about $42 and $77 and the Warped Tour is still in the $23-$37 range.
Ah, we can all sleep soundly at night knowing that Warped Tour won’t buckle under economic pressures.

Well, this is a Catch 22. Bands are making money on records anymore so they have to tour more to survive. Bands need to tour more to survive, so ticket prices edge higher… fans stop going to shows because ticket prices are too high.
What’s the solution?

What are the costs associated to the venue in those ticket prices? Because let’s take the I-Wirelss Center in town here. It seats up to 11,500 people. The last time I saw Clapton there, I paid 90$ for a ticket and I was in the top part of the upper bowl in a packed house. Just figuring every ticket costed 90$ that’s a little over $1.25mil in ticket sales alone. Then factor in merch sales and whatever, it still seems like a shitton of money.

Ticket prices aren’t THAT bad. Plus, the whole experience of seeing your favourite band is well worth it. So far hasn’t deterred me from going to see any bands. Most concerts I go to are like $20 though.

Alot of music fans are teens, and young adults (such as college students). We have alot of sh*t to prepare for as far as paying student loads and stuff, and then you add in $100+ ticket, and how can that be afforded on near minimum wage?

Pfft. That is what people get for going to such concerts. A lot of it boils down to supply & demand, though. The bigger the demand, the more its going to cost.
