Van Halen Not Into McCain, Palin

mccain-van-halen.jpg

The above caption is from the 1986 album Look What the Cat Dragged In, by Poison. Some might say it’s an inappropriate song to play while introducing Sarah Palin, John McCain’s new VP selection. That’s a no brainer.

But another song that’s inappropriate, according to Van Halen’s management, is Right Now. The song was used the other night, without permission, and they’re mad as heck.

Can you think of other song titles that might be inappropriate?

This seems to pop up every election cycle. Does anyone know the copyright law on this?

i think you have to pay royalties on every public performance of a song (which, i guess, playing at campaign stops counts as). but i think the issue here isn’t copyright laws. it’s that the musicians are saying that when you play their song on a campaign stop, you’re trying to imply that they support you.

    Only stupid people imply that.

Isn’t it the label/publishers that grant the permission? I doubt VH owns their songs, and their label probably wouldn’t refuse the money.

Did McCain’s peepz pay the royalties? If so, suing them would be a waste of time. All Van Halen should do is just to a PR and say McCain is old and Palin has a Grand Rapids accent.

Also, they should have played “Hot For Teacher”.

Palin was probably a teacher at one point. All women have been teachers, right?

I would be looking for “Nothin’ But A Good Time” with Sarah Palin, how could I resist but “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and the Republicans would want to ruin my life to intimidate me from squealing and I’d have to “Ride The Wind” out of the United States.

When I look at her, I think more of “You Sexy Thang” by Hot Chocolate. My blue state is all red because I want to get a filibuster sent through her Congress.

I think it was an odd choice because with as much as she has accomplished in her 4.5 years or so of being mayor then governor, Mitt Romney has expertise in the economy which everyone wants improvement on and she has ties to oil drilling which is more divisive.

KillerQueen, Palin’s church is Assemblies of God, which isn’t fundamentalist. If you’re going to unfairly stereotype at least get your terms right.

They should have played a Nugent song.

Palin has more guts than any of the pussies from Van Halen…. BTW, my vote for Obama’s theme song is Rush’s “2112″. “We’ve taken care of everything, the words you read the songs you sing….” Think about it, collectivist sheep… “O-baahhh-ma!!”

i don’t like van halen…but i have to side with them on this…if you’re going to use a tune for a campaign you need to get permission and pay your royalties. I know when there was an election for district council 13 here in philly and republican incumbent John Bagsawelth wanted to use my song “tax the homeless” i said, no john no…no way will i let you pay me to use my song when i’d be happy to support your tax cuts on the highest one percent for FREE! long live voo-doo economics…its been working so far baby! yeah!

The Weathermen connection is bullshit. Obama happened to serve on some committee with Bill Ayers, it’s not as if they’re great pals like the right-wing slime machine would like people to think. As for Black Liberation Theology, how dare those uppity black people interpret the Christian religion differently?
