Weekend Old School: A Tribute To Christian Metal

It’s Easter! Whether you’re going to church, sleeping late or eating some chocolate eggs, there is nothing more fitting to celebrate this holiday than rocking out to some old school Christian metal. What says ‘empty tomb’ like a little Deliverance? I’ve compiled videos from five bands that I remember most vividly during my formative metal years. So before you go to bed tonight, be sure to thank the good Lord Jesus for such mighty metal messengers.

Deliverance - Weapons Of Our Warfare

Deliverance

Vengeance Rising - Before The Time

Vengeance Rising

Zao (live) - In Loving Kindness

Training For Utopia - Two Hands

Training For Utopia

Tourniquet - Ark Of Suffering

Oh how the times change, how did christian metal go so far down the toilet (musically speaking).

“The Weaaaapons of our Warfare aren’t….. HUAH!!”

That song is what got me into playing guitar. I’ve even got that video on an old Heaven’s Metal VHS tape. Amazing guitar work/solo.

Kyle, it’s OK if you don’t believe in God. The very fact you live around IWU sanctifies you.

ah! but i escaped! i live in indy now. but i still go there every once in a while for free food…

does that make me a sinner?

Well part of the reason that many think good Christian metal bands are on the decline is that A) Many of them aren’t as vocal about their beliefs and tend to just fit themselves into the mainstream. B) Many good musicians are less interested in the metal genre and instead work in metalcore, rock, and pop, or as studio msuicians. Idk, just a theory, but I think it’s a legit theory

    What, no Stryper?

Dr. Jones - I could never wrap my head around the ultra low rise striped pants

Kyle - I’d say no, since there is still and extension campus in naptown. That being said, I think you fit right into the cosmic purpose of IWU’s missionary goals: to feed the hungry ;)

O Demon Hunter, your members once contained such wonderful music flowing from their instruments. Wherefore didst thou leave the narrow path of wonderment and beauty to the well-trodden and wide road of mediocrity?

  15. On 03/25/08 1:00 AM, Howard said:

mike: wherefore hast thine true appreciation flown?
And what hast thou ever done?

Bollocks. Why give good music to such shitty people?

That Tourniquet vid made me search for some of their live stuff. They sound so much better live than on their recordings.

Woah. Howard. Buddy. Just a joke.

I actually like Demon Hunter. I just loved TFU so very much more. Maybe I took it too far with ‘mediocrity’. They’re a couple steps above it.

  18. On 03/25/08 2:26 PM, Jay DiNitto said:

I never understood the fascination with TFU. There was no bass and the guitars were mud. But hey, who cares, if people like it…

Definitely did like the vocals though, both then and in DH.

It’s not that big of a deal, mike.
What if you were IN Demon Hunter, though?

I’m not sure what turned me on so much to TFU. I think I just liked the sheer chaos of it all.

The thing I miss most about earlier bands is that along with their message they also had the musical chops to back it up. In the mid to late 90s I spent much more time listening to Christian metal/metalcore/hardcore because I felt that it really rivaled most anything else out at the time. Another great example of this would be .hopesfall. in the early stages. They were totally forthright in their beliefs and ministry, and Frailty of Words is a phenomenal. The first blindside album was really good, too.

Sadly, I feel like that musical integrity has been thrown to the wayside more often than not in lieu of watered down spiritualism. Of course I might be pushing 30 and have lost any sort of relevance to the scene-at-large.

CHAD is retarded, TFU was never a christian band. I asked Ryan Clark years ago, when i saw them play in 1999.
