Wikipedia Gold: Winger

Wikipedia Gold: Winger
Anytime, anywhere.

Wikipedia can be either a treasure trove of information or a smelly mineshaft of deceit. Once in a while, Buzzgrinder staffers will stumble upon something on there that’s too glittery to pass up just because it’s not current. Music industry gold may just get better with age…

In an interview conducted around the mid-nineties, Kip Winger of Winger had it in for Lars and the rest of Metallica. There was a few seconds footage of Lars removing darts from a pinned-up picture of Kip.

That is why it’s the great irony that we ended up on that geeky guy’s shirt on Beavis & Butthead, because Metallica couldn’t play what we play, they couldn’t do it, they literally – technically couldn’t do it. And I’ll fucking challenge those chumps to a fight any day of the week, but we could play their music with our hands tied behind our back.

The incriminating video is after the jump. Check the 2:55 mark.

I don’t know, ryan. Metallica’s 2 or 3 classic “good” albums kind of sealed the deal the other way.

give me a break man. metallica is a great band, no doubt about it. when it comes to great live players though and everyone person in the band being amazing at what they do then i think winger wins hands down. Its too bad lars lack of drumming accounts for metallica’s musical faults because the rest of the band are great players.

I can’t believe I’ve never seen that quote. Hahahaha. Made my day.

And yeah Jay, in many people’s opinions, Lars is a very sub-par drummer. It’s especially evident on the last few albums, but many critics feel that the drumming is what kept Metallica’s albums from perfection.

Just compare him to Gene Hoglan or Dave Lombardo from the same period. And once you get into the last twenty years of so, into the progressive and extreme genres, metal drumming really comes into it’s own and has some real stand out drummers.

And back a bit more on topic, Winger would probably die fighting their groupies.

Well, I know…but comparing him to Winger’s drummer like that? Eh…

hats off to Kip Winger. he managed to escape his 80s hair metal past and actually do some respectable musical projects (like his solo work and singing for Jordan Rudess) as opposed to other 80’s stars-turned-failures (i’m looking at you Bret Michaels).

Was Winger’s drummer being compared to Metallica? Directly?! My bad, missed that entirely.

My interest with Winger begins and ends with the fact that one of them played in Alice Cooper’s band. I don’t think I can name one of their songs if my life depended on it, much less one of their members!

Its always been about the song dude. Even in classical music. Mozart for example never really paved any “new” compositional roads. He didn’t really do anything that was new or groundbreaking, or even overly technical. However, he did what he did BETTER than the other composers of his day. He wrote better songs. It’s always about the song.
