Bixler-Zavala Says New Mars Volta Album is Pop

Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala recently talked to Drowned in Sound about the band’s new album. In the interview, which will be released in full next week, Bixler-Zavala claimed that Octahedron is a pop album.
We always threatened we’d make a pop record. We wanted to make the opposite of all the other records we’d done. Sometimes it’s good to get rid of an old audience…because they know what to expect. And I’m sure whatever audience we get from this album, we’ll disappoint them with the next.
Hmm, maybe this could be interesting — a Mars Volta album with all of the talent involved and none (or at least less) of the self-indulgence. Then again, pop is a pretty relative term. It could just mean that the songs will be 30 seconds of awesome music followed by three minutes of annoying noise instead of the requisite eight minutes of annoying noise.

ATDI will never happen unless it’s for money. I guarantee you that. Seems like bands can’t get over their differences, for the most part, unless wounds can be mended with the almighty dollar.

atdi is not getting back. mars volta continuously says they don’t really care about money so they wouldn’t get back together for money. Plus TMV is awesome so they don’t need to get back to atdi.

ATDI is dead – omar isnt going backwards – the band after the volta will be even more amazing – heard el grupo neuvo yet ? take more drugs folks, then it will sound better, and the voltas new record isn’t pop – its mellow volta – plenty of weirdness and plenty of jams – everything has to have a label of classification these days – prozac rotting our societies – peace – not pop

The new album is pop, in the sense that they return to parts more than once. Unfortunately, it’s “pop” without any good hooks. These tunes are completely unmemorable.
