Dinosaur Jr., Cobra Verde, Witch Dudes Start Sweet Apple
Dave from Ghettoblaster IMed me this weekend to let me know that Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis, some Cobra Verde dudes (John Petkovic, Tim Parnin) and one of Mascis’ Witch bandmates (Dave Sweetapple) got together to form a new band, Sweet Apple.
To those in the know, it’s almost — almost — like saying Dinosaur Jr. and Guided By Voices are joining forces. Cobra Verde was essentially Bob Pollard’s backing band when I was first exposed to GBV (that’d be Mag Earwhig! era, and thanks to Beavis and Butthead no less).
So while it isn’t really a marriage between Dino Jr. and GBV, you can see why I might want to kiss some puppies. Plus, the Cobra Verde dudes are good in their own right. So there’s that, too.
The track below, Do You Remember, is exactly what you would expect to hear considering who’s in the band. But I’ll echo Dave’s sentiments here and say that it’s also exactly what I want it to be.
