Does Anyone Care What Dolly Parton Has to Say About Michael Jackson?
I guess maybe Dolly Parton and Michael Jackson were friends because they had about the same amount of plastic surgery, but I’m not really sure why Parton felt the urge to vlog about him. Or why she expected anyone to care.
Then again, she did record Jolene before she got all cracked out from her addiction to botox and collagen — so that counts for something.
What I really want to know is this, though: Where are the Crystal Gale and Tanya Tucker vlog tributes to Billy Mays?

Couple things:
Did I see an attempt to smile there at the end? Must be hard for the poor woman.
And no way does Tanya Tucker come any where near Dolly in terms of legend-ness.. I don’t think I’ll be taking the family for a nice relaxing vacation in Tanyawood.
But is is wrong to want to see Tanya Tucker tribute to Billy Mays?

I have a friend who’s really into her, so she might care.

Buzzgrinder must care enough to lend it some press time/space. Let go of your indie cred for just a sec and admit that Dolly holds a special place in the American heart (as did Jacko)…and it’s not just because Jack White digs her. Her legend was in tact when Jack was still in Catholic school.
And by the way, Dollywood is pretty awesome.

Understand your point, Kevin, but asking if someone cares is mostly different than actually caring. It’s kind of a meta-inquiry, but that sounds retarded so never mind that.

No need to explain semantics, Jay. Just some friendly razzing on my hipster blogging friends. It’s easy to do when the person’s not right next to me, but anonymous on the interwebs. I’m sure Sean will punch me next time I see him for calling him a hipster too
(Remember our skinny vs. bootcut jean discussion, Sean? Being a hipster circa 2002-2004 was way cooler; clothes more comfy at least).Keep up the quest of musical discovery, praise and slander, Buzzgrinder. There’s a reason I get these daily feeds in my Netvibes…For every crappy band I hear about through this blog, I hear about just as many keepers. Cheers.

kevin, you are a doll. honest. and i’m still rocking my bootcuts.
but the phenomenon you’re talking about is what spurred my post yesterday asking people about old time country greats. i hate that people don’t recognize that folks like dolly parton actually made (not necessarily make, in the present tense) good music.
also, i’m glad we’re hitting about 50%. that’s about 50% higher than i estimate.

I’d say “make” in the present tense. Perhaps she’s jumped on the “Oh Brother Where Art Thou – get back to your bluegrass roots” bandwagon of the past nine years, but she’s a welcome (re)addition to the bluegrass community. She knows the stuff after all, coming from the Smokey Mountains. And according to Dr. Ralph Stanley, one can’t truly know mountain music unless you come from the hills. She definitely can hold her own in the high lonesome key of B.
But I agree with you about her previous work and its important place in the American music canon. And I’ll bet her longtime fans still sport bootcut jeans too

it always warms my heart to see another person mention that fact.
