From the Buzzgrinder Vault: Papercut, Killswitch Engage, Amoeba
Remember when Buzzgrinder was good? You know, before we jumped the shark? Yeah, we don’t either. But we are going to crack open our archives once a week anyway, to see what we were talking about around this date in the middle of the decade, now that it’s almost over and all.
:: This is the week I started working with Seth directly, when we put our noses to the grindstone for what would eventually become our single-page, photocopied zine, Papercut. We did five issues, had it distributed on the merch tables of about 20 bands when it was all said and done (with some notable folks helping us rep it, in addition to the record store and miscellaneous shops that carried it), and we still feel like it was some of Buzzgrinder’s best stuff. Sadly, getting it all together (organization, paginatation, printing, distribution) became too much for our schedules.
:: Killswitch Engage was making money, which I assume they still are.
:: Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails aren’t as revolutionary as some people think. Steadman gave away its entire catalog after nixing a contract with Arista.
:: It breaks my heart to read about it, but the Promise Ring reunion show in Chicago was less than stellar.
:: Brandtson went into the studio for what ended up being their last full-length, Hello, Control — an album that weirded a lot of people out. A change from angular, Midwest emo to scenester dance punk will do that, though.
:: Amoeba Records announced that they would launch a digital store. Innovative, right?
:: Showbread tried to weasel their way onto Warped Tour ‘06, and Kevin Lyman was none too pleased. Shockinly, they didn’t end up on the lineup.
