Oh the irony… someone that would have been cut from the audition process being a special guest… singing… I bet Simon’s head was exploding!

The only two artists that I enjoy hearing with extreme autotune settings are Cynic and Cher, and the latter because her voice otherwise would drive me to suicide.

    agreed

Cynic’s use of autotune is more of an effect to create atmosphere, as opposed to a crutch like so many artists are using it for today.

Where is the outrage over this clown?!?! Why would anyone pay to see him anymore? When can we have an Orange-Bowl-05-Ashlee-Simpson-style boo-fest for Kanye? The fact that he is as successful as he is personally offends me and diminishes my faith in the populace as a whole.

I appreciate the irony of auto-tune on American Idol, though all of the winners end up using it when they get into the actual industry anyway. As to the atmosphere vs. crutch issue, the artist that made heavy autotuning mainstream is T-Pain, who does use it for effect and in fact still considers himself a rapper rather than a singer. He, along with most hip-hop artists who use the autotune, is a producer who wants to sing his own hooks instead of just writing them. Since the producers are the primary “music” bit of hip-hop, I have no problem with it. Kanye also began as a producer, and simply wanted to do an album about personal issues that he would rather sing himself. And the sort of people who went to his shows in the first place still go to his shows because he still performs his rap songs as well as the autotune material. The differences between modern pop-rap and electronica musically are minimal.
