Morning Buzz: Les Paul, Flaming Lips, Converge

:: Les Paul‘s body will be laid to rest in Wilwaukee, Wis., this Friday.

:: R.E.M. is releasing a live album with 39 songs on it. That’s about 35 more than they needs. Nah, I’m kidding. Those kids are alright. They’re a good up-and-coming band. You’ll probably see some good things from these dudes in the future.

:: The new Living Sacrifice album is going to be out in November. Overrated or underrated? It’s strange when you can legitimately wonder about that on both side with one band.

:: Kids in L.A. were lucky enough to catch some new tracks from The Flaming Lips live recently. And they got to hear something very odd: The band apparently wasn’t tripping balls while performing. Weird, right?

:: So it looks like some folks are hating on Converge for being on Epitaph. Can you really say Converge is selling out? I mean, you can’t, because you’ll get punched in the face by Kurt Ballou. But really, are they? Well?

:: Random tracks that don’t suck:
Bonnie Prince Billly – I Am Goodbye
BS2000 – Wait a Minute
Bear Colony – Hospital Rooms Aren’t for Lovers

I’d say LS is…rated. Outside of the Christian kids they’re honestly not worth mentioning with the greats, and I don’t think they would last if they were promoted solely in the general market.

But they’ve influenced/encouraged plenty of us and disregarded/outlasted a bunch of trends throughout the years. And they simply write some pretty good songs. That counts for something.

The new Converge track on their myspace totally destroys. I don’t really think a band that has been around for almost 20 years can sell out at this point either.

I’ve yet to hear the new Converge songs, but I don’t expect much. Anyway, this is like the third album on Epitaph for Converge, and Deathwish is releasing the vinyl, surprise there I’m sure.

it’s really grey this morning. bear colony’s from little rock. and living sacrifice has ties to little rock as well. through a drummer who drummed for evanesence i believe? and according to the wikipedia entry they started in little rock in 89, not bad. i have a bunch of their stuff but really never listen to it. little rock represent!

i’m going to listen to the new converge now.

I only liked Hammer and Reborn. Conceived in fire sounded a little too polished. Hammer had all the triggered drums, but conceived in fire over did it for me. But I do really like the new stuff.

Jay, i think Living Sacrifice is even too christian for christian kids, or christian posers, aka you group kids

The new Converge left me sitting there with a blank expression on my face, but in a good way. Wasn’t expecting it in the least. May be one of the few cds I buy this year, since I have no money whatsoever.

As for LS, I think they’re still a good band, I love the new songs, but if they went into the secular market, I doubt they’d do very well, mostly because the bands that sell and attract now are on a completely different end of the spectrum of what LS is at.

And Bonnie Prince Billy needs to stop randomly playing out of nowhere. The song doesn’t mesh well with Converge, at all.
