Neko Case – Middle Cyclone

Maybe I’m biased because I listened to Fox Confessor habitually for months. Or because I think she’s hot. Or because she is what makes The New Pornographers listenable.
Or maybe she is just really good at making music that does everything right. It’s like listening to the sounds of twilight at fall or driving in farm country with the windows down. (I’m pretty sure she’s aware of this; Middle Cyclone ends with 30 minutes of the crickets and frogs often heard at such times.)
This album is flawless. It maintains her trademark smoky, dark tone but rather than her usual collection of veiled stories and unexplained meanings, she takes a more direct tone with this collection of (mostly) love songs. A tricky move that’s hard to pull off well, but she manages just fine. No surprise here.

I like the maneater song, but I haven’t really heard any other standout track.
